What’s the background on so many Colombian mercenaries in Ukraine?
The Colombian mercenary backgrounds vary. They have been:
- Ex Cops
- Ex military
- Ex security guards
- Fascists/nazis
- Paramilitary troops that are currently working counter insurgency or criminal organizations
- Regular people blinded by the 2k USD salary(that never gets paid btw) that Ukrainian NGOs offer through Tiktok or other recruitment channels.
This type of background is very similar to plenty of other Latam mercenaries such as Brazilian or my country Mexico.

They have experience in killing people due to the long war against the socialists. Also Coca-Cola death squads slaughtering local environmentalists.
Cartels often list members as guns-for-hire. Plus international mercenary work is a wonderful money laundering operation.
Poverty is also a major influence since Ukraine is still offering a wage where the monthly amount is higher than many yearly salaries in many Columbian municipalities. Columbia also has fairly lax immigration and movement laws, meaning that the authorities won’t look to much into your overseas “adventures”, as opposed to other countries who might not take kindly to their citizens fighting for a foreign military.
