I mean, I get why books are being destroyed (the spines are cut open as part of the scanning process and it’s too expensive to put them back together at scale/copyright issues), but it’s as the headline says. Not exactly something that generates sympathy. Another problem is they’re all doing it and not sharing the results. Even if they make some godly AI supercomputer, thousands of other companies were doing the same thing on failed projects, destroying millions of books for nothing.

Sadly :( and even our comrades will cheer it on, they think AI is an amazing way of preserving knowledge and the costs are worth it… I am forever techno-negative after this era and seeing the response communists have to it.

I agree, that’s why I try to say comrades and not cause a split by othering people, there’s a very bad tension but that’ll be a problem under class society always so only answer is solidarity in each other’s problems, which is why I become sad when I see comrades mocking anti data center protests and struggles of people in whose communities data centers pop up.

A lot of this is copyright law problems. The digital scans of all these books should be made publicly available even if most are useless like guides to windows 2000
Just from a pure “make the models better” standpoint it makes more sense to centralize and distribute the data gained widely here. China does that btw.
They are destroying the used book stores entire industry, since these rely on books being sold and re-sold. They destroy them because of a loophole in copyright law. Since the original is destroyed, there’s no “copy”. Just one book that’s first on a stable medium, able to last decades, than on a very volatile medium, that will last ten years max (and will probably be deleted earlier, after used for training or when this company gets sold/bankrupt at the latest).
