Service for the Mario Kart Tour game for smart devices will come to an end as of 11:00 p.m. Pacific on September 29.
We sincerely thank the many players who have loved and supported the game since service began so long ago.
Thank you for playing Mario Kart Tour.
See the below articles for information on how rubies and Mario Kart Tour Gold Passes are handled starting July 7, 2026.
Yet another example of why physical media must be preserved. Personally I am never using a “games as a service” game ever again.
This is/was a free mobile game/app.
That you need a paid device to play, and a paid internet connection. Nothing about it is free.
Just as much as all of the other gacha/microtransaction filled mobile games are “free”, yes.
I am familiar. Doesn’t change the fact that it was digital only, and now the game will be completely inaccessible. Any money anyone spent on it is completely wasted. If it was a physical game, there would be options. Even if they would be limited. Free mobile games are just the “games as a service” model until the company decides they are not making enough money to support it. Happened just a little while ago with Elder Scrolls Blades too.
I don’t see how physical media would help… The servers get shut down.
You can still download and install the APK for Blades, and it doesn’t work. What difference would physical media make here?People get games that have their servers shut down running all the time. There are entire communities of people who play games like that. My point is that if you have these games physically, they cannot prevent people from legally getting their hands on the files. And there are always talented people who will find ways to get shut down games running again. The reason physical media matters here is because this is another example of a game being completely digital, and a company being able to revoke access to games or content that people paid money for. We need to protect the ownership of the things we make purchases on. This was a free game, but there were also ways to spend money on it. And as usual, the company said anyone who spent money can go fuck themselves. Physical media is one option that helps combat shit like this. No company would have ever been able to pull off something like that before games went digital.
Nothing, people just don’t understand that there is a distinction here between digital games and DRM-required/always online games. There was another thread in a different community the other day with tons of people ranting about how digital games were awful and we need to bring back physical media. This has absolutely nothing to do with digital vs physical.
Tour was the free mobile game, right?
I didn’t even know people played. I tried it but quickly realized it was shit.
Invest your money in things that last, so we can have more things that last.
