I don’t think they’re falling for it as much as using it as an excuse. It’s a “we must win at any cost” mindset, believing some enemy ideology won over half the nation and they might as well cheat, because they see drag queens on TV so the liberal media brainwashing the nation is the way they’re being cheated.
In any case that’s the lie conservative voters are being sold, that this new age ideology and “woke mind virus” is winning and now they have to do anything to stop it. I doubt Johnson believes it as much as is a huge fucking gaping pussy that is falling in line to stay relevant politically.
Conservative politicians are like the dude working at the register who steals money from it, then tells the boss the other guy is stealing from the register. Then when anyone blames him, they can say “I said it first”.
