Just started using an electric blanket and now waking in the night completely packed in by cats, maybe even more so than usual.

People who have been ill lately:
Is it particularly bad cuz I sorta feel like I did when I had old mate Rona.
yes, it’s bad but without the brain fog of rona
to me it’s like whooping cough but not as bad
I found my dream guitar for a nightmare price

I actually got to play one the other night and holy shit it’s fucking amazing.
(sighs longingly)
Small picture here for me only saw the $384.29
Zoomed in a bit… ‘oh… there’s a 4 in front’ :(
Like, it’s worth it, but I can’t justify that kind of money on a single instrument when I could pretty much make my studio almost pro level with that money.
And that’s still for a made in Korea model?
Yep. Which is insane!
I know the stuff made in other countries is getting better but that doesn’t mean you can charge MIJ prices
Had a talk with my allergy doctor to prep before my appt next Monday. He said no anti-antihistamines starting tomorrow so we can do all the allergy testing.
I nearly burst out crying. 😢 I’m really scared. I can survive on porridge, ham sandwiches and egg sandwiches and bananas.
And I’ll make a quiche, that’s safe.
I will make a cottage pie, that’s safe and very healthy and satisfying
You can do this, Seagoon!!! A week of restriction and then ✨ answers ✨
I’m already restricting my diet so much
I hope you finally get some answers. ❤️
thanks, Imma be tested for 30 different potential food allergens
Anyone got any decent soundproofing / draughtproofing recs? I hit up draughtproofing melbs but they 1) wanted photos and tried to quote off that and 2) very clearly send rote generated emails no matter what you tell them.
so they can go fuck themselves (yes i am salty today)
I’ve heard some libraries have rentable thermal cameras, see where the hot and cold spots are?
I actually have one! The windows we’re eventually goi g to go full double glazed, so curtains are thermal breaking atm. The front door having visible gaps and the dining/basement area are the bugbears atm as we’re not replacing those. Back door? Getting a new one. Windows? Working to replace. So bit by bit we go through. I’ll be 400 by the time we’re done but it’ll be awesome :P
Are you looking for recommendations for a business to do this for you, or general thoughts on the topic? I can’t provide recommendations for a business, but have PLENTY of general thoughts if this is what you are looking for.
all about the bidness atm. I know what needs to be done, I just do not have the time - I’m a year behind my food garden area, looking to build the wraparound bookcase this winter, so I gotta also get the workshop up and running and I also work full time and special needs felines. I will hire someone else to do the cunt job of kerf insulating the door and slapping the underfloor woolies on.
Will respond with other logon later tonight due to work pressure atm. In brief I looked into this in some detail a few years ago. There are undoubtedly new products on the market since then, but happy to share the gist of what I found out if OK with you. Basic physics dudnt change much over time.
sounds good.
Only hard rules I have are fuck spray foam and we want to keep the front door.
OK, home again, fed and watered and ready to rock & roll.
A lot of this you already know. But I’m going to say it anyway cos it helps me think. I’ve put this under a spoiler cos it’s long.

The basic problem is: a residence containing two humans, various cats and Vats of Fermenting Liquids. And an environment that needs to be 1) Dry enough for comfort, 2) Moist enough for comfort, 3) maintain a defined temperature profile. ‘Comfort’ being the desirable range of temperature and humidity for the precise organism using that space, according to the weather of the day. Which changes with the seasons.
Basic fact: humans breathe out 1-2.5 KILOS of carbon dioxide and 1+ kg of water vapour every day. More if you exercise. And require a steady supply of oxygen and removal of waste gases or horrible things happen. This outgassing includes carbon dioxide, water vapour, cat farts, bacon cooking smells and the aforementioned Vats. I don’t have data on cats or Vats - but I suspect you do and can make decisions accordingly.
I am reminded of a ghastly experience I had back when I worked in insurance and the company hired a hall so that the execs could address everybody all at once about planned changes. It was a beautiful hall, very well built with no leaks. Only they forgot to turn on the aircon in the hall for the event. They realised their mistake when most of the audience (about 2000 people) slowly keeled over and slumped to the floor from lack of oxygen and excessive carbon dioxide. I was one of the audience and was lucky enough to be right at the back and an early beneficiary of the bloke who sprinted to the doors and propped them open so we could all breathe again. Some of the people in the front row had to be hospitalised for observation afterwards. So gas exchange matters.
Also, still air is a WONDERFUL insulator. Nearly every possible kind of insulation does just one thing - it slows down and immobilises air to form a barrier again moving air. Usually by trapping it in a structure of some kind, which is terrible for air exchange. Foam, wool, wood shavings, fabric offcuts, there’s a ton of options at various price points. However, still air does very little to help dispose of waste/unwanted gases. And water vapour. Even double glazing is trapped air between two sheets (or more) of glass. And you can have the best double glazing in the world and it won’t work if the window rattles in the frame cos there’s a gap that lets untreated air in/out. The other kind on insulation is reflective - bounces heat/cold back out from a space technology film of some kind. This too does not permit air exchange because it has to be sealed and continuous to work properly.
Water vapour and ventilation. This is a biggie. And it’s where really serious insulation of any kind meets the real world and fails. Because excessive water vapour/condensation is where mould comes into the picture, and mould inside the house is usually a very bad idea for human/cat health. And the air trapping kind of insulation (any sort) is a prime breeding ground for mould if it gets wet. The reflective kind of insulation also is a mould breeder if warm moist air hits it and you get condensation forming. Most commercial insulation types have some sort of moisture barrier, or you can use building foil which will help a great deal cos it’s reflective too.
House construction is a weird (conceptually) mixture of keeping things out (rain, mozzies, burglars) and keeping things in (cats, loud music, thermal comfort). And sometimes you have to make a choice between two mutually exclusive ends that are both desirable and necessary and you can’t have both at the same time.
So I would would give serious thought to zoning the kind of insulation you require.
Identify the areas that need to be warm and dry, those that can be cooler but must still be dry, and those where water vapour is going to be a daily necessity to be dealt with (bathrooms). And deal accordingly. Sealing off various areas for special treatment seems to me to be a good idea - the Vats may need their own little greenhouse structure for effective temperature and humidity control. Well fitted doors are pretty effective at sealing off portions of a structure. Particularly if you put those fringe thingies around any gaps between the door and the frame. I looooove the ducted heating in my bathroom - whoever put that there was a genius! If the weather is cold enough to need the heating, then condensation just doesn’t happen once the heating is on. And if the weather is warmer, the condensation still doesn’t happen cos I open the window to let the water vapour out.
Also, aircon can deal with a lot of issues but isn’t a total fix - it’s expensive to run year round unless you have solar panels and a battery. But it does do well at air exchange if it’s vented outside and pulls in fresh air/oxygen.
So, in conclusion, standard insulation is a good thing but you need to pay attention to gaps. Aircon is a must if you are going to seal up rooms to prevent moving air coming in from outside. Consider zoning which bits of the house needs what.
That’s more than enough I reckon. You know your own situation best and you’re not afraid of looking at whatever options are available.
Yeaj we’re not looking for air tightness. I like houses to breathe. Otherwise they just straight up smell like arse. Plus cats like sniffing the wonders on the breeze.
The windows are being replaced because they are old as hell, with aluminium frames that let in everything. (Ditto back door, except that doesn’t have asbestos mastic) Front door you can visibly see light on three sides. Floor over brewery? Actually has a measurable six degree difference between that and the room next to it over the subfloor (which is also quite high, but has a dirt floor and built into the slope so higher thermal mass)
Not sure what you mean by vats? Hubs has a braumeister with a condenser hood, and fermentation is done in sealed vessels, same with my washes.
Yeah, I’m looking at doing the underfloor myself for the bedrooms. If its easy I’ll do the rest, if it’s hard I’ll have done the bedrooms.
The problematic part we have is the brewery - unfortunately also the coldest part due to the void. Thinking of getting a sheet of foilboard and seeing what it does, i’ll find other uses if no bueno
I think tonight is a night for potat. With chilli and yummy things on top. I believe I even have spring onion available.
Teeth dreams. More exhausting that not sleeping at all.
I hate when I wake up feeling exhausted from batshit crazy dreams… but I’d also miss my dreams if I didn’t have them. Okay, maybe not the nightmares, but gotta take the good with the bad.
hugs ☕
Thank you
Every few days I get an email at work offering me a place an opportunity to sponsor a Golf Club in Scotland. Amongst all of the offers from factories that tout their partnerships with many big brands, this one makes me laugh.
any particular golf club?
They pick a new one out of a kilt every year
Ranfurly Castle Golf Club. Not to be confused with Old Course Ranfurly, which apparently can happen.
Yeah! I can’t remember which, I’ll have to check tomorrow. I remember it’s got a great google rating! 😆
I won $18 on tattslotto + scratchie tickets. What should I spend my big winnings on?
Another lottery ticket?
Hahaha. I have done that before.
Cheap booze, duh.
Nah cheap booze makes me puke but I might put it towards something nicer. 👍
Had some cool and vivid dreams last night. Can’t remember a damn thing, but woke up feeling good and rested.
I had many dreams I can’t remember. All I managed to hang onto when the alarm went off was the idea of BOTH hamburgers and sausages. But I have absolutely no context for this.
Our brains do some weird shit when left alone. Are you going to be making hamburgers and/or sausages for dinner this week now?
I have a feeling it was about something being planned by or for someone else, maybe. It seemed really important to me to hold on to that idea while the rest of the dream was slipping away, but I have absolutely no idea why. I think there was a much closer relationship between them than just being cooked within the same week, some sort of combination where they would become part of one single thing. It was an amazing solution to a vexing problem that I can no longer remember.
There is a good chance I will be eating both at some point during the week, but that applies to any random week, really.
¿Por qué no los dos?
a rainbow effect in clouds over Footscray

another sunny day at the beach 🙂

Computer problems last night. Felt bad so I was up very late. At least I have today off but it’s not how I wanted my night or today to go
Such is the burden of IT
This was on the Linux drive too, which is extra weird. And it also took a snapshot of itself so it kind of fixed its own problem. So it’s like, why did you break to start with?
I swear the most nerve wracking question in IT is: why did it fix itself?!?!
beach
kitchen clean
lunch made
breakfast eaten
meds taken
cats fed
coughs coughed
messages read 🥰
time for another sleep
I was barely out of bed at that point, look at you kickin’ ass!!
I get up around 5.30-6 everyday and do early chores.
Boyo gets up for work at 5:30am, I’d like to start doing the same and getting some exercise in, but I’ve been very, very lazy. Something I really need to work on!
Hope your illness is on it’s way out.
It is. thanks. 😘
Thanks for reminding me about the meds. It is meds and sleep time.
