As a Canadian I would love this to be able to travel and live in European countries much easier. But, also as a Canadian, I wouldn’t want Europeans to have to then share a border with the US.

To be fair Canada’s industrial capacity would help the EU both militarily and industrially not to mention their natural resources. If the EU can figure out a way to add Canada legally it would benefit both dramatically

It would also mean a lot more east-west infrastructure investment and more open cross border trade agreements between provinces. I can only think of upsides to this practically speaking. It’ll upset a lot of provincial industries that have been protected by trade barriers within Canada but it needs to be done… We can’t keep rent seeking forever…

Canada already shares a border with Denmark and France, so it’s not that much of a stretch.

Taking this seriously for a second: Legally there is no real fundamental obstacle to Canada joining the EU. While only “European” countries are intended to join, this is not a strict geographic criterion (Cyprus is commonly not considered part of geographical Europe). It basically suffices that all member states and Canada agree on Canada being European. Maybe it would help if Canada joined Eurovision before though ;)

Much bigger are the political obstacles, for many reasons. Joining the EU is not merely joining a free trade zone, it is more like joining a confederation. That said, it is also hard to imagine how NAFTA membership and being part of the Single Market could be possible at the same time. Never mind the nighmare of having a long Single Market border with the US.

Of course if there is sufficient will there is a way but I don’t see it. One does not always have to marry, being friends is also an option.

The majority of the EU are already NATO and would already be beholden to come to our aid if we invoked article V because the US attacked us.
