Just noticed they’re used by both Bajorans and Cardassians.

Text in the first panel is irrelevant - it was just the best quality picture I could find for that scene.

Since it’s Kai Winn? Torture device on loan from Delores Umbridge. The activation phrase is set to “My Child.”

Hi-tech… praying things, that the Cardassians for some reason adopted in the occupation? Maybe the Cardassians were trying to contact the prophets.

It’s a security feature. They don’t actually do anything. But nobody who’s not supposed to sit there knows that. When you touch both of them to see what they do, you’re instantly disintegrated.

My friend, you and I have astonishingly different definitions of “don’t actually do anything”

I did see that myself while writing.
        Decided to go with it.

I mean, from the users point of view, nothing happened.

    For those wondering:

    Spoiler

Correct answer: they’re inkwells. The round domes are the lids. In between them are pens/stylii. They may be decorative or they may be functional. It’s hard to tell.

Do you know the TOS salt shaker story?

In ‘The Man Trap’ there’s a scene where two members chat. There’s a salt shaker prominent in the scene. The props department sent someone out to buy a bunch of exotic salt shakers. When they looked at the ‘modern’ shakers they realized that no one at home would know what they were supposed to be.

In the end they shot the scene with a salt shaker from the commissary and used the exotic ones to fill Dr. McCoy’s medical bag.

It’s a metal which their physiology requires, but is low in their food supply, so they lick the metal orbs once in a while.
