14·1 day agoIt’s not, but you bring up a very good point about responsibility. We need to be using language like that and not feeding into the hype.
I don’t even like calling LLMs “AI” because it gives a false impression of their capabilities.

DeGoogle Yourself@lemmy.ml•As a Turkish citizen, I cannot stand this. Wake up! Turn to FOSS and Decentralized applications. The new pandemic is "identity verification" and every country is about to fall into this trap.English
29·1 day agoI think there is value in the concept of a government-operated “social media” website that’s open for public comment on laws, policies, etc, and requires proof of occupancy in order to participate.
But government “identity verification” to participate on the internet at large is tyranny.

But if true- this is depressing. I’ve always viewed Ars as a sort of standard bearer when it comes to tech news. Other outlets like The Verge do a lot of “best [product]” articles with affiliate links, and while I understand why, and don’t think they’re being dishonest, it just feels cheap. Seeing Ars fail at basic fact-checking is truly depressing.
I still pronounce it W’orf

2·2 days agoIt plays fine for me without being logged in (desktop not mobile), but I did have to click “x” on the login popup. Can’t browse the profile or anything else, though. But yes, Imginn is great. Highly recommended.

3·2 days agoI’m going to pretend this never happened.
In an alternate universe somewhere, they created a real comic we could all purchase immediately and this episode was the surprise reveal.

Even if we don’t see any of the cast, it would be SO badass to see Disco pop in and save the day during a space battle for a moment then just pop back out.

4·2 days agoI didn’t love the basic setup - using a derelict ship that people died on as a training ground didn’t really sit well with me - but it was a decent story in that setting.
To me it gave “this is the best we can afford right now” vibes. They clearly can afford better, but that was my impression of the message they were trying to send.

Kidding obviously, but I am right there with you 😂
EDIT: For the record I loved the Disco S1 Klingons and they never should have wussed out with those but I can live with it.

6·2 days agoPaul Giamatti and Holly Hunter were just absolutely amazing this episode.
Couldn’t agree more. Just absolutely riveting scene with little else going on besides his angry ranting and her micro-expressions. So many layers to both of their performances.
I’m with nearly all your other observations too. Even the Kyle Jay Den thing manages to feel natural and awkward in a wholesome realistic way for a character who has had all of ten seconds of screen time.
Yes [Caleb’s] an ass at first as the defenses instinctively trigger
This is the only part I’m not sure I fully agree with you on. I think Caleb’s reaction to having his childhood trauma brought up against is will during a time he is supposed to be feeling safe being vulnerable is completely understandable. “She can’t help it” isn’t an excuse in my book. BUT they both handled it maturely later with cool heads and that’s what matters. He is definitely going to think she’s a badass (maybe because that scene was maybe one of the most badass moments we’ve ever seen on Star Trek).

14·3 days agoOddly enough the Sisko impression is one of the best I’ve ever seen

😂 Honestly I start to feel bad for someone like this. The entire point of these LLMs is basically allowing someone to live inside of a pretend reality where they can’t be hurt… and this guy can’t even manage that.
