This 1993 stage production was my introduction to Porgy and Bess and is my perennial standard for such a beautiful opera, but the more I listen to Audra McDonald’s production the more I love it. They take the best parts of Gershwin’s style and turn them up to 11. The real brilliance of his music and the radical beauty of black opera come out in the duets between McDonald and Lewis.
