A downy woodpecker lives behind my home. The exact moment dawn breaks, it flies around drilling as loudly as a jackhammer outside. It will hit all the trees in the area, so every 20 seconds or so the jackhammer will change to be on the roof or in a different room or behind my car. When it’s done feeding, it spends the afternoon aggressively flying around the area screaming at people until sunset.

Part of me wishes I had increased the volume to accurately reflect how loud it is, but then it becomes a jump scare. For the first week I thought someone was doing construction three hours before the nightly noise ordinance lifted until I heard it while outside.
