    The first verse

Through the winter’s ice and cold
    Down Nicollet Avenue
A city aflame fought fire and ice
    ‘Neath an occupier’s boots
King Trump’s private army from the DHS
    Guns belted to their coats
Came to Minneapolis to enforce the law
    Or so their story goes

I’m disappointed he doesn’t use words like “peaceful” and “vote!”

    -–

    Edit

The Boss should have called me and I wouldda helped him out with my skillz.

    Remember - be peaceful. 'N don’t… forget… to… vote…

Yeah I also found it super cringe. The music was sleep-inducing, like an AI parody of every Springsteen track.

      The lyrics… Yikes

Compare to Neil Young’s reaction to Kent State: “Tin soldiers and Nixon’s coming, We’re finally on our own. This summer I hear the drumming, Four dead in Ohio”

That’s coupled Neil repeating the tragedy “Four dead in Ohio” in urgent tones. Everything about it designed to stick in your head and give voice to the outrage. To make you feel like you weren’t alone in your. The guitar riff is weird, a little chaotic, but also gives a feeling of a call to action like Reveille on a trumpet

Classic Neil. Ohio is 56 years old and I reckon people will still remember the song on its 100th birthday.

like an AI parody of every Springsteen track.

I had that vibe too: a bit soulless, a bit off-putting and very clumsy in context. My parody lyrics are still making me laugh: Remember - be peaceful. 'N don’t… forget… to… vote… I think Springsteen’s ego go the better of him and he went on an uninspired autopilot. The people around him surely knew the song was bad in a way that made in impossible to be salvagable. Yet nobody around him had the moxie to say something like “Bruce, um… I think you should start over.”

Maybe he thinks of himself as a Great Man and if you’re around him - you have to remember that at all times. I’ve always admired Springsteen as a songwriter and performer but I don’t respect him as a person. I love so many songs of his from the 1970s until his Nebraska album in 1982. I bet that’s 30+ songs. But for all his “workin’ man” shtick - how can he support people like Obama? What did Obama ever do for the workin’ man?

I’ll never understand the POV of people like Springsteen.

        • At this point in his career I don’t think Bruce, his team, or even his listeners are all that invested in the quality of his new songs. To them his legacy is secure. For me, the first thing I think of when I hear his name now is the “meet in the middle” superbowl commercial he did a few years back about how we are all just too dang divided (it was an ad for jeep lol)

Hopefully in twenty years I’ll be back to thinking “born to run” instead of “Obama podcast”

I never watch team sports or ads. I miss out on some real Americana stuff. I guess the workin’ man wants The Boss to have another 10 mil (or whatever) in his pocket. Everybody needs walkin’ around money. Or am I all wrong? Did he donate the money to charity? I’m going to google the details.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gPOPLrUfyw

Vomit. I thought he was at least nominally to the left of center. I had no idea his politics were even worse than that.

Google was shit and it wasted my time.

            • I don’t know how much Jeep paid him.
            • I don’t know how much he donates to charity: yearly or in total. The results were contradictory.

It’s fine. It’s certainly no Ghost of Tom Joad. The important thing is it’ll resonate with some of the folks out there. I’m sure there were commies complaining about Ohio when it came out. lol.
