I don’t have time right now to corroborate this. Also, if you rely on .world News/Politics, start checking modlogs on removals, they’re gobsmacking. A particular mod likes to remove threads as a sneaky way to rm comments.

The reporting from Maddow is that an amendment to the DHS funding bill that was passed out of committee was removed at the request of the Whitehouse. This amendment included language to prevent ICE from detaining and deporting citizens which is already illegal.

What I cannot find (with some very lose and quick research) is the actual text of the amendment. Nothing was included in the bill that would make it legal for them to detain and deport a US citizen. ICE’s authority to arrest and detain under 8 U.S.C. § 1226 and § 1231 applies only to “aliens.” Once an individual is confirmed to be a U.S. citizen, ICE loses its legal basis for custody.

IMO it seems like an empty gesture without any sort of enforcement (remember I did not find the text of the removed amendment). We are already dealing with a militia that is operating outside the rule of law.

Actually slowing this down or putting up a road block would require laws that actually address the detainment of US citizens, as the current laws only seem to address the authority of ICE in dealing with alien residents. The would also need to be an independent watchdog and actual codified consequences for detaining US citizens in these dragnet operations.

I would not be surprised if this is true.

I am surprised that Rachel Maddow of all people managed to do something useful for once in terms of reporting.

To be fair, her podcast, “Ultra” is very good. It’s a history of the “America First” movement from the 1930s through the 60’s. Like we love saying USAmerica is fascist, imperialist, whatever, all true; but the actual formal american fascist movement, the mainstream politicians and business owners who were like “we love Hitler, fascism is the future,” like totally out in the open, I was not aware of that history at all, and I’m an USAmerican who studies history.

Her team had to go into all these archives to dig up the recorded history of this movement, from pre-ww2 through McCarthyism.

I was surprised that Maddow had such a good podcast, def recommend it

The entire concept of deportation is to send people to their country of origin (well, the place where they’re a citizen).

Where, exactly, do you deport a US citizen? The town where they were born or became naturalized? It makes no sense.

I’ve seen this happen with others, in other states, allegedly people who left to fight with Da’esh forces. They became stateless, and I don’t know what happened to them.

Its a violation of international law to denaturalize a citizen and leave them stateless. Although Im not sure international law or human rights mean anything to this administration

Assumedly if that actually happened, hopefully people from the US would be eligible for asylum in a lot of countries just like when other countries commit human rights violations against their citizens
