Genshin Impact but… different? IDK how to describe WuWa that isn’t in the context of the company that made it, the previous games (like PGR, and Genshin Impact) and the differences between ‘gacha games’ that doesn’t sound gacha-rotted to an average person, but it’s supposed to be more ‘generous’, and high graphic compared to Genshin.
Gacha games are just popular because of the time sink and habitual ‘dailies’ routines when playing games and living the 9 to 5 life, also gambling surges your dopamine lol
It’s so fucking weird how it’s called the Game Awards and they speedrun through the actual awards now. I’m imagining if the Oscars were like this and it’s mostly just ads and awful skits and then they go “yeah, best foreign film is ____. Back to the ads.”

IDK Empire at War was a great strategy game (early 2006, barely fits the requirement) and I know The Old Republic scratches the WoW itch for many of my friends. I also had a ton of fun in the original Battlefront/II.
Funny you mention that. People who said Total Warhammer 40k couldnt be done look no further then Empire At War. Replace the planetary combat with Dawn of War 1 and you have a game I would play for 10.000 hours. (Just as an example)
The guys who are doing 40k did Halo Wars 2, and are a Creative Assembly studio. There’s an even more recent example.

They already have the established relationship with GW, and Old World is rapidly gaining on 40k in the internal competition GW has between their settings so 40k needs Juice outside of the boring ass ultramarines release for tabletop in the 500 worlds announcement.* There’s no way it isn’t Total War: 40k
