Society doesn’t prioritize knowledge for it’s own sake. It prioritizes making money. If society was different, more people could pursue hard sciences.
I know, its really a shame about all those low paying STEM jobs. I remember back when I was a kid I used to tell everyone I wanted to be an engineer when I grew up, but all the moneys in literature and poetry so thats what I had to do. Damn you, capitalism!

There’s a difference between being an engineer and being a physicist. One deepens our understanding of the universe and the other uses our understanding of physics to build products. One is clearly valued more by capitalism.

Also people aren’t necessarily able to monetize their interest in science. Maybe if there were no barriers like people needing to pay for education, food, shelter, transportation, medical care, and the air they breathe then maybe a larger portion of those people would be the mage they want to be or at least closer to it.
