US still malding over Soviet space program kicking their ass despite importing the entirety of V2 rocket team is hilarious.

My favorite is the “lost astronaut” conspiracy to cope with the fact that America was clapping whole crews before even leaving the atmosphere.

Edit: “As of December 2024, in-flight accidents have killed 15 astronauts and 4 cosmonauts in five separate incidents.” according to wiki.

It always comes across to me as maximum cope when Americans brag about “winning the space race”. I mean, even if it was true, the US’s economy was massively wealthier than the USSR’s. This “race” was literally between the wealthiest country on earth and a very poor country. Even at the height of the USSR, its GDP was only about half that of the US’s.

It really does not show the US’s “strength” to brag so much about winning against someone with so much less resources. It’s a sign of weakness to actually even be in a “race” with a developing country to begin with, which suggests they are actually competitive and have a chance of winning.

That’s really what the whole “space race” shows. It does not matter who “won”, the very fact a poor developing nation could compete with the wealthiest and most powerful country on earth in the first place demonstrates the extraordinary weakness of the capitalist system.

The US only placed a man on the moon because of NASA, which they founded as a direct response to the Soviets launching Sputnik. Meaning, the US literally only implemented this space program as a response to the Soviets, they were not a natural outgrowth of the US’s system and would not have happened without the Soviets (as we have seen NASA massively defunded ever since). The fact the US even got on the moon in the first place only happened because of the USSR.

That was back in 1969, and we’re now in 2022 yet, funnily enough, the capitalist private sector has not got a man that far yet.

I’ll always remember how the movie First Man failed at the box office because it wasn’t blatantly propagandising about the Americans winning the Space Race but instead just a movie about a deeply lonely and traumatised Neil Armstrong. Americans just want to see Neil Armstrong and his pal Buzz Aldrin sticking an American flag on the moon while the riff from Free Bird plays

They had the entire Nazi V-2 team with von Braun and all the top ranking scientists, all the blueprints and documentations, intact copies of the rockets and launchers, and trained crew for launching the rockets, and still lost the space race to the Soviets who had to reverse engineer from scratch.

"Ah but you don’t understand, the soviets, like today’s Chinese, are incapable of original thought, and copies all their designs from NASA! smuglord " - every redditor ever.

No seriously, I saw a comment on a thread about idk, those emulation handhelds(?) and a Redditor said the Chinese are incapable of making ballpoint pens until 2017.

As long as Westerners have an enemy, they think so highly of themselves that they can’t conceive of anyone from bad country doing what they do.

It is not just that they could do it, but the speed at which they achieved it was what was truly shocking to the capitalist West.

From reverse engineering the A-4 (V-2) to serial production of the world’s first ICBM in 12 years is nuts. This was a feat that has not been and likely will never be repeated again in history. Stalin was a true visionary and while many have questioned his decisions in other respects, on the space program he made crucial decisions that allowed the USSR to take the lead. History would turned out very different if it had been someone else in charge making slightly different decisions along this process.

As soon as the war ended, Stalin set 3 national priorities for the USSR: air defense, atomic bomb and the space program (ICBM). Today, even 30 years after USSR collapsed and Russia’s economy is ruined, it is still a leading nation in air defense systems, nuclear technology and ICBMs. As long as Russia maintains its lead on all three fronts, NATO will never be able to invade Russia.

All these decisions made in the 1940s.

HOLY SHIT! Based Soviet Union defeated the evil empire with spit and band aids. pit sputnik

The Soviet supply chain was a disaster, and many of its machines barely worked.

this “disaster supply chain” lasted beyond the collapse of the government and was delivering US astronauts to the ISS long after NASA lost that capacity

Soviet machines barely worked which is why the Soyuz has a pathetic safety record compared to the space shuttle. Hang on, I’m getting a memo.
