Kim Dotcom is recovering in hospital after reportedly suffering a stroke earlier this month. Dotcom was taken to a local hospital on November 7 and then rushed to a regional hospital for treatment. A post to X in Dotcom’s name on Monday informed followers that after suffering “a serious stroke” his recovery is now in the hands of “the best health professionals.”

Interesting that Kim Dotcom blames the MAGA boogeyman “deep state communists” for his persecution and celebrated Trump’s win, while Trump’s supreme court is currently poised to force ISPs to crack down on bittorrent traffic. I don’t expect intelligence form Dotcom, but does he really think a conservative oligarchy is going to be friendlier to the users of decentralized anti-corporate protocols?

The only reasons countries like Russia and china don’t police piracy is because not doing so hurts US corporate interests, not because they love free speech and want to enable circumvention of government-enforced censorship.

I know this is serious. But I can’t stop thinking how cringe is the fact he changed his lastname to Dotcom.

Man that’s fucked up. I hope he makes a full recovery. Sadly, he’s very over weight and I’m sure that contributed to it. Uncontrolled blood pressure probably

Regardless of what you think of him or his actions, it’s pretty horrible that Hollywood can induce so much prolonged stress on the accused before charges are even faced in court that it results in this.

Wait, the guy is heavy! Pretty sure it’s saturated fatty acid and cholesterol clocking his arteries, not Hollywood.

Yeah that absolutely would have played a big factor, but stress increases stroke risk as well, so it’s likely a combination of issues. I don’t think it should come as a surprise that this happened to him right after he lost his decade-long battle to avoid extradition to the US.

Ukrainian sovereignty (something Dotcom has actively rallied against) is more important to me than a slow, bloated file hosting site. He’s also openly antisemetic.

Respect for editing your previous comment, while leaving the original text struck through, in light of your newly learned context on this person.

Side note, as time goes on I realize that a lot of people who I looked up to in my youth, specifically people that espoused a free and open internet, public ownership of knowledge and learning resources, basically all the hacker ethos stuff, wind up having a side to them along these lines. Maybe it’s a racist neo-nazi ideology like Dotcom, maybe it’s the defense of CSA materials like Aaron Schwartz, but it always feels like something.

With the amount of unmoderated nazi and neo-nazi stuff on Steam I’ve seen since I made the account for HL2 and the recent interest Congress has taken in it, I’m worried this trend is going to continue and we’ll learn some heinous shit about Gabe Newell.

      Why?

“Dotcom founded the Internet Party in New Zealand in 2014, promoting digital rights, privacy, and government transparency.”

If someone is working these values in with them.

If you believe Kim Dotcom is promoting those values you are a complete sucker. He consistently advocates for more authoritarian control over the Internet, not less. Plus:

Dotcom has repeatedly spread anti-Ukrainian falsehoods, and Russian government propaganda.

        And

In an August 2024 Twitter post, Dotcom quoted passages from The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a discredited antisemitic text purporting to prove the existence of a Jewish conspiracy for world domination. That October, he promoted the neo-Nazi propaganda film Europa: The Last Battle.

Christ, imagine propagating The Protocols of the Elders of Zion in 2024. Its got to be one of the most debunked documents in history:

The spurious character of the Protocols was first revealed in 1921 by Philip Graves of The Times (London), who demonstrated their obvious resemblance to a satire on Napoleon III by the French lawyer Maurice Joly, published in 1864 and entitled Dialogue aux enfers entre Machiavel et Montesquieu (“Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu”). Subsequent investigation, particularly by the Russian historian Vladimir Burtsev, revealed that the Protocols were forgeries compounded by officials of the Russian secret police out of the satire of Joly, a fantastic novel (Biarritz) by Hermann Goedsche (1868), and other sources.

          From Britannica

They were literally debunked over 100 years ago.

From the article, quoting him on Twitter just before the stroke:

@KimDotcom How did the deep state communists think that they could get away with their bullshit? When the economy is flopping nobody cares about media lies and celebrity endorsements. Americans pay much more for the basics and they want to stop the bleeding from their wallets. It’s over!

@KimDotcom Europe will be liberated next. This is your end @vonderleyen This is your end @Bundeskanzler This is your end@EmmanuelMacron This is your end @Keir_Starmer This is your end @ZelenskyyUa You are terrible. Get lost.

So conspiracy theorist and hate monger at the very least. That didn’t inspire me to get to know him further.
