A few years ago a lib coworker showed me a clip on YouTube.

Every “joke” felt like it was written by a committee of libs, trying to make the most inoffensive material possible while pandering to DNC libs.

Because it was written by a committee. You really think a guy who spent all his life in South Africa understands the ins and outs of US politics and culture? He’s just there to deliver the jokes and collect a paycheck.

He just fundamentally did not understand American politics and the culture/society around it, which meant all his jokes fell flat. There may be many similarities between South Africa and the United States, but there are also many key differences. That kind of thing is important to understand when your entire job revolves around making jokes about American society and politics, and he just did not get it.

he had some funny bits but they were mostly stories about life in south africa apartheid and what it’s like to experience south african racism vs US racism. but i dont think he was ever great.

Pretty funny because he actually understands what he’s talking about. A lot of his South African specials have aged really poorly in hindsight though, especially when he went through his edgy phase in the early 2010s. Most infamous clip from that was when he made fun of striking miners. Lots of sexist and antisemitic jokes about Jewish women as well, but the latter was limited to text based social media like Twitter and never made an appearance on his comedy specials, as far as I remember.
