Imperialism is cool as long as the people doing the imperialism call themselves socialists or communists 🙂↕️

AI@lemmy.ml•Why isn’t there an AI that compresses music into tiny files and recreates it accurately?
9·26 days agoWe already have quite good methods for compression, both lossy and lossless. Any “AI” method would have to reliably beat the benchmarks set by those. Seems like that hasn’t happened yet, though there definitely is research in that direction.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.ca•Does it ever make sense to have the window open with AC on?
4·1 month agoAs long as having the windows open and the AC running has the same effect, it makes sense to do both. As soon as the AC has to work against the air coming in from outside, it probably makes sense to either close the windows or turn off the AC.
Even then it might make sense to keep doing both though. For example, if the AC only changes air temperature and moisture, but does not reduce volatile organic compounds, and it’s hot and humid outside. You keep the window open to keep VOC low, while keeping the AC on to keep temperature and moisture pleasant.
How about, instead of trying to invert existing injustices by replacing patriarchy with matriarchy, we instead tried to move past them entirely, striving for a post-gender society where gender identity has no influence whatsoever on rights, respect and opportunities?

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Does being a ‘hero’ mean you are a perfect person?
6·1 month agoNo, it just means you are someone that helps others, even when you know that you won’t gain anything from that yourself.
And a whole lot of “something” would get done if there was no veto power.

Ask Lemmygrad@lemmygrad.ml•Why didn’t other former SSRs inherit the USSR’s nuclear weapons?
104·2 months agohttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budapest_Memorandum
Long story short: The fewer nuclear powers, the better. A bunch of countries promised to protect the sovereignty of these countries if they returned the weapons to russia. Didn’t quite work out.

Europe@feddit.org•Germany Is Looking at How to Cut France Out of Fighter Jet PlanEnglish
15·2 months agoFCAS is a multinational project with pillars, or work packages, distributed among the three partners France, Germany and Spain. This division among national lines takes precedence over the division among company lines, as the project deals with national classified data which may only be handled by citizens of the corresponding nation.
So while Airbus is an international company, it has German and Spanish work packages that only German and Spanish nationals are allowed to see/work on.
French Dassault was responsible for Pillar one, the core of the project, which was the development of the “New Generation Fighter”.
Dassault/France decided to pull out of FCAS and develop their “New Generation Fighter” entirely on their own.
Now German and Spanish partners are left with an FCAS project without its centerpiece, and they are mad.
Anger is mostly directed at Dassault, which is refusing to work with its supposed partners, turning a tri-national project into a national with no regard for the effect this has on German and Spanish counterparts.
But the French Government also has a part in this. Dassault is their contractor, but they allow this to happen.
Or maybe trans culture is just about recognizing the fact that biology (as most things) is too complex to allow for a neat (binary) classification of every single individual.
Gender is a man-made concept. It works well enough for most of us, but there are edge cases where things are not so clear. Trans culture is about recognizing this, and realizing there is nothing wrong with that.
Anyway, I don’t see what any of this has to do with rape. Who do I rape by not fitting neatly into any of the two classical gender categories?
Try asking your daughter to outline her desired career path and which degrees she needs for that.
Does she want to work as a medical professional? This university will not help her with that, as it is not accredited as a medical school.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•erotic scenes actors and actresses, how do you not get aroused while acting in those scenes?
46·2 months ago- who says they don’t?
- its probably not quite as erotic when there is an entire crew pointing lights, cameras and microphones at you, and a director giving you instructions
It’s really more of a contract, “I promise to carry and raise your children, you promise to provide the money” That’s why throughout much of history, you couldn’t get divorced, it wasn’t about love, it was about security.
Nowadays marriage isn’t really as important as before, but still relevant. For women, having a child usually still means making career sacrifices.
Having something like the UN is nice, but as long as the security council works the way it does, we might as well not bother.

Off My Chest@lemmy.world•i'm a bad person and no one would or should like the real me.English
9·2 months agoAs long as you recognize there is a problem, you can work on it. It sounds like you are still pretty young, so you have plenty of time to figure stuff out, also things will get better after puberty.
If you feel you need help, get help, preferably from professionals, nothing wrong with asking for help.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•would you visit an authoritarian country if you had the chance to live there up to 4 weeks for free even if you believe multiparty democracy to be something non negotiable?
11·2 months agoWe shouldn’t confuse the effectiveness of these protests with their legality. Yes, the protests moved the government to change its approach to prevent even more unrest. Still, the CCP considered them to be illegal and reacted with force, arresting participants or those that spread information about the protests.

91·2 months agoI have a Taiwanese friend who is very much anti-CCP, but he does go to china for vacation every now and then.
Yes, you need to be in the right headspace, you cannot expect to vocally or publicly criticize the government and go unpunished. But politics are not everything. China is beautiful in many ways and has many great people. I think it would be a good idea to take the opportunity and make this experience. And afterwards, your opinions on china and the CCP will have a stronger foundation than they do now.
edit: you say you are politically active: is this evident from your social media accounts? That might be problematic.

I am not defending US imperialism, just criticizing a double standard.
Imperialism is a state seeking to maintain and/or extend power over other states. That is exactly what China is doing with Taiwan. Of course, unequal exchange is also a form of imperialism.
That’s just wrong. What is true though is that civil wars more often than not are influenced by foreign powers trying to influence them to their own benefit.
