In short:

Australia’s envoy to combat antisemitism is proposing visa review measures and bans on face coverings in a report delivered 10 months after the Bondi Beach terror attack.

Jillian Segal is also calling for creative industries to take steps to re-engage with Jewish artists.

The measures are among a raft of proposals building on an earlier plan to combat antisemitism.

The report calls for the introduction of restrictions on protests, such as bans on face coverings.

Ms Segal has also proposed safe access exclusion zones for protests, citing similar measures that prevent protests outside abortion clinics.

The report has recommended the government trial a “modest” grant program to help re-engage Jewish creatives and stories into the arts sector.

It also recommends enforceable conditions for arts funding from organisations such as Creative Australia that would allow grants to be terminated if a recipient engaged in antisemitism.

The Department of Home Affairs has already begun training staff involved in visa processing to help them recognise antisemitism.

But the report recommends setting up a dedicated group within the department to review previously granted visas where there are “credible concerns” the visa holder may hold antisemitic views.

The report includes further detail on a proposal for extra oversight of public broadcasters the ABC and SBS, to prevent “the spread of antisemitic ideas and narratives”.

Reading Anti-Zionism by Benjamin Moser has been a tremendous education for me. Jillian Segal should never have been placed in this position and must be resisted at every turn, for the sake of all Australians including Jews.

    Wait, there’s more…

This blog piece describes additional changes Ms Segal would have Australian institutions make plus of course the outright lies about the number of Palestinians killed so far. That anyone takes the report seriously is shameful. Yet it will probably be used to further tighten control over the progressive movement. I hope I’m mistaken.

I don’t think you’re mistaken. Jess Wilson has promised to crack down on pro-palestine protests if elected, making it illegal without a permit.

      They’re all moving in lockstep

we do have a very real problem with anti-Semitism

Do we? I personally find there’s much more racism towards indigenous/Muslim/African cultures than Jewish. I’ve honestly never really seen it… but I’m not from a major city

I’ve witnessed a small amount, and am also aware of organised antisemitism through neo-Nazi movements. And from my perspective, the fact that I’ve seen less of it than anti-indigenous/Arabic/African/Muslim bigotry doesn’t make it any less real and less important to stamp out alongside other bigotry.

(It probably helps that I don’t spend much time in places where people are comfortable expressing bigotry).

know what you mean, i grew up in small town and never heard an ill word towards jews until south park started and kids started copying.

agree that indigenous, muslim and african communities cop it far worse day to day.

but yes we do have a problem… 15 people got slaughtered just over a year ago.

It seems like a bit of a stretch to say Australia has had a problem with anti-semitism for centuries considering as the country is hardly centries old. As a genuine question, how does this antisemitism appear / impact day to day life ?

Dude. Are you fucking serious. Brighton lawsuit, canberra bombings, Bondi massacre, “Abo land not kike land” swastikas on jewish headstones, we have literally seen a rise in far right dipshits who only have one playbook and go after Jews like they’re nip and you want to sit ther and go “hmmm, I dont see it”

            And them there’s the microagressions.

I’m not even jewish and see this shit. Your ignorance does not negate reality

You can’t find it? We literally expelled the iranian ambassador over it.

Maybe take a beat and provide a link. Don’t forget it can be pretty hard to remember all the horrible events happening these days for people.

I also had no idea what the Canberra bombings were meaned to be in reference to.

I wish the ALP would prioritize governing for the benefit of regular Australians a bit more. Come out to your electorates and talk to your voters instead of hand out positions and power to people like Segal or Inman Grant to make decisions impacting our lives with no mandate from Australian voters. It is a cop out and these conservative appointments have fuck all to do with the reasons we elected Labor or the things we are still waiting for Labor to deliver.
