is there any matrix client (for linux) which satisfies all of these requirements?

  • is not an electron app. (tauri or something else which uses libwebkitgtk would be acceptable, or even some web app i can self-host on localhost, though i’d prefer a native app)
  • has full text search of encrypted rooms
  • saves everything (ideally including attachments) locally so that i can read old messages while offline
  • allows disabling read receipts, typing notifications, presence, and perhaps other privacy-hostile anti-features i don’t even know exist in the protocol
  • is actively maintained

Preemptive warning that not all boxes are probably ticked.

I used FluffyChat Desktop for quite some time, but there were frequent new glitches with new updates. Now I’m trying NeoChat and it seems ok so far. Not an electron app. It’d be cool with an app that lets you access saved chats offline indeed! I don’t know if NeoChat can do that.

Incidentally, maybe some of the boxes may be ticked by Thunderbird’s built-in chat capabilities? I occasionally access my Matrix account from there too.

I used FluffyChat on ios but I had to go back to elementx, because of the absolutely insane 30 second (and more) lag when opening the app. That was some kind of regression, because it worked a few months ago, but one loses patience when the chat is used for personal/family matter and this was crippling. Searching for help essentially found other people having that problem with fluffy but no real solution.

element X is mobile only, i’m looking for something to use on Linux. (but also: does it even have offline support and/or search of encrypted rooms?)

I’m not aware of anything that meets these requirements, which is really unfortunate because many of these items are important features that many users would want. Even if some of the requirements were removed (eg: Linux support, nin-Electron app, disabling read receipts), the number of available options doesn’t change much. Hopefully some options become available soon that meet all these requirements and more (eg: Matrix RTC, spaces/threads, multi-account)!

Sorry, I know this comment doesn’t help much, but I wanted to at least post this for whatever additional visibility this may provide. I’m really hopeful this part of the Matrix ecosystem grows because while there are many Matrix client options, there aren’t really many (or any) that align with Matrix 2.0’s goals and have mass market appeal.

Anything using the matrix rust SDK should be able to do these things. I’m not sure if it ticks every box here, but maybe give Fractal a go. It’s native GTK and uses the rust SDK

Fractal is nice but it doesn’t have offline support or any search functionality at all.

Rust SDK definitely supports both of those things, so it’s definitely a skill issue on Fractal’s part. Shame. May be worth reaching out to the developers about exposing that functionality

      Lightning looks really good

interesting, i hadn’t heard of that one before. have you actually tried it?

      pros:

      • not a web app
      • has search of encrypted rooms
      • supports spaces and threads, two features many clients lack
      • supports calling and screen sharing (i’ve never used matrix for either and don’t particularly want to, but, ok…)

      cons:

      • project started 3 months ago
      • appears to be authored using an LLM agent (Codex) mostly by a lone developer who has (afaict) not published any other software before and has minimal web presence
      • written in C++ (which is safer than C but still an unsafe language)
      • does not appear to have offline support - it says encrypted search uses a local search index, not a local copy of the full history 😢

it is being very actively developed so far; maybe i’d try it out if it is still around next year

gomuks does have a self-hostable web UI i could use with a browser (in addition to offering an electron wrapper for it) but they don’t indicate that they have search of encrypted rooms and/or offline support. (do they?)

Just Ctrl+F it will bring up search which queries the local gomuks.db

It cannot start in offline mode but it’ll keep itself up when disconnected from your server. Might wanna feature request that one
