One family member that has not been discussed much is Thing. Many of you may know Thing from the show, or the movies. But in the strip, Thing was quite different, Thing was a person. In fact that is Thing down in the bottom left.
I briefly mentioned Thing near the start of this journey, in week 3.

This image is the cover for Addams and Evil, published in 1947. At this time Fester, Granny Frump, and Grandmama were not yet official members of the Family.
In the TV show Pugsley has a pet octopus, here Wednesday can be seen holding a presumably toy octopus.
There really is not much of a “comic” to this strip, being the book cover. But it is a picture i enjoy a lot, and it fits well with my cozy theme of the last couple weeks.

Gonna turn me into a fan at this rate, this is cool knowledge
Keep checking out the different posts, I still get comments about them, sometimes questions. I always do my best to answer the questions, so there is history constantly being added.

It is lovely!
And my jaw is absolutely on the floor about “Thing.” I mean, I’m not much of an AF expert specifically, but over the years I would have thought I’d picked up on such a major character shift from cartoons–> TV show. Dammit.
Talk about squandering my life!
Thing T. Thing, often referred to as just Thing, is a fictional character in The Addams Family series. The Addamses call it “Thing” because it is something that cannot be identified, being originally an unseen creature in the original cartoons. Starting with the live-action television series, it was settled to be a disembodied hand. It is known as “Mãozinha” (Little Hand) in Brazil, “Cosa” (Thing) in Spain, “Dedos” (Fingers) in Hispanic America, “Mano” (Hand) in Italy, “La Chose” (the Thing) in French-speaking countries, “eiskaltes Händchen” (icecold little hand) in German-speaking countries, “Rąsia” (Small hand) in Polish, and “Izé” (Whatchamacallit, Thingamajig) in Hungarian.
“The Thing is often observed watching the family through the balustrades of the balcony over the living room. We don’t know quite who or what he is, but, whatever, he’s the soul of good nature—at least, he grins perpetually and may occasionally whimper.” — Charles Addams
Thing was usually a right hand, but [Ted] Cassidy sometimes played him as left, simply to see if anyone would notice. Thing is credited as “Itself” at the end of each episode.
The first appearance of Thing is this strip published 6 August 1938. It is also the first appearance of Morticia, and Lurch.

This is a vastly more significant strip than I ever suspected. (and I always thought it was a genius, underrated classic)

My gosh, that’s wonderful.
Anyways, as usual, I really am humbled by your efforts upon this project, N. It’s just… so friggin’ cool, respectful and THOROUGH!
Oh! My doofus, half-baked brain just remembered something-- (ruh-roh)
FUN FACT: It was Lurch himself (Ted Cassidy) who performed THING in the TV series!
Since [Ted] Cassidy was 6 feet 9 inches (2.06 m) tall, using him to depict Thing caused great technical difficulties on the set of The Addams Family. In many scenes he lay on his back on a wheeled trolley below the line of sight of the cameras and inserted his arm through the bottom of the box.
One of the many, many bespoke and similar situations upon producing television series (and more).
As usual, I would strongly suggest this site, if interested:

Interesting stuff, thank you
