It seems like a decent deal.

This week, Denmark has extricated itself from a period of coercive US diplomacy over Greenland. The agreement announced on 22 September elegantly resolves the dispute over the territory, without forcing Denmark or the government of Greenland to give up very much.

        According to the Guardian:

Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, and Múte B Egede, the foreign minister, received a hero’s welcome when they landed back in Nuuk from New York on Wednesday night – and a nation took a collective sigh of relief.

Ideally none of this would have happened, and much is still unsure, but it seems like a decent outcome for now.

When a guest, who doesn’t give a shit about deals, is open threatening you to invade your home, make it his and kick you out, you give him more of your home (or at least the same) and other concessions where they co-decide who you can invite, share your stuff with and celebrate it?

I’m not sure that analogy fits the situation.

There’s a difference between everyday “fairness” and pragmatic international diplomacy - but to answer your question, yes-ish? The Chatham House article at least argues that this deal indeed represent a succesful way to stand up to a bully.

The idea is they wouldn’t launch open warfare against all of nato at once but rather increase attacks with plausible deniability against single weaker member to test alliance resolve and see where the red line is. That way they would destroy NATO by calling into question article five. All the weapons are not so much for actual warfare but to signal to Russia what the consequences would be if they fuck around.

Putin knows he’s in trouble. He will have to double down or fold. And we all know that he’s too insane to fold.

    • He’d rather be beaten to a pulp by NATO than admit he’s losing to Ukraine. He’s been provoking NATO into retaliation and calling it an unprovoked attack but they’re not biting and are happy to let Ukraine humiliate him some more. The desperate move left is to actually attack a NATO country outright. That it needs to come to this.

He’d rather be beaten to a pulp by NATO

You seem sure that NATO would respond in a effective way to an attack on any of its allies instead of just calling emergency meetings, strongly opposing things and considering sanctions. Personally, seeing how NATO did absolutely nothing after multiple previous attacks on its members I have my doubts.

I think Putin will, but only when he’s finally on the ropes with Ukraine or internally.

Then he’ll attack NATO in order to provoke a response - the the prospect of full-scale war with NATO (and full mobilisation of the sons and daughters of Moscow and St. Petersburg) will allow Putin to secure a quick peace treaty that will likely force him out of Ukraine, but since it wasn’t Ukraine that beat him, but ‘all of NATO’ he’ll be able to avoid the window himself.

Xi Jinping is literally, actually in the fucking White House, right now, and Trump just spent the last week telling Ukraine to stop attacking Russian fuel.

It would be war and they’ve got a pretty good chance of winning since they’ve already defeated NATO’s largest force.

Correct. Russia and China have effectively defeated the USA portion of NATO because I truly believe Trump and the GOP would refuse summons from an Article 5.

Russia and China are the reason Trump is president.

Maybe. Trump’s power is waning, and it’s hard to predict exactly what he would do anyway. It’s likely democrats will control congress next year and can send aid. If Europe can hold out until 2029, a different president might be more willing to provide active support.

If Europe can hold out until 2029

Why would anyone who considers Europe an advarsary wait until they rebuild their militaries?

During the first impeachment hearings Dr. Hill said a lot of things that are worth remembering. One of those things is that Russia had a plan for whichever candidate won the trump v clinton election.

When they say “attack a NATO country” it will probably be a drone that ‘got lost’ or worst case, an ‘uprising of local Russian people’ in eastern Estonia similar to how crimea / Donbass was annexed. Putin doesn’t want war with NATO. He wants to destroy the NATO alliance by testing its resolve.

Imagine like 500-1000 troops annexe 5 square km in eastern Estonia and call it an uprising. Estonia evokes article 5. On the Russian side of the border sits artillery and troops all zeroed in on that 5 square km. Russia makes a statement saying ‘any attack on free russian people is an attack on Russia’. What does NATO do?
