    My greatest regret from having central blind spots in one eye is that I cannot really do these any more even though I very much know how to do them.

    I was one of those AuDHD sensory kids before we had such buzzwords, and I got the original Magic Eye and later Magic Eye II at the school book fair! The first time one popped into focus blew my frickin mind! I looked at those things so much that to this day I can do the eye diverging thing at will with nothing to focus on. Just look right through the TV, lol.

    However, right now there’s some coral reef documentary footage on screen, and I did the eye diverging intro a swirling school of fish. Got a bit 3D and trippy, lol.

      You know, that was me, too. I never could see anything in those posters people had.

      But lately I’ve been seeing posts from someone on Facebook that makes them, and I’ve been able to see the image when I view it on my tablet or laptop.

      This one didn’t work, but I’m on my phone and don’t have my glasses on. I’ll try it on a larger screen later.

        It was only a couple of years ago I finally managed tomdo these. It frustrated me sommuch as a kid.

        People say relax your eyes which never worked. It’s keeping your eyes crossed which works for me, don’t track the image. Takes me a few goes now and in this one it’s a Romulan War ship (whatever they’re called)

          I just tried it on my tablet. I can see enough to know it’s a Warbird (only because of the Star Trek context, though), but it’s not coming out clearly to me like the ones I saw on Facebook were. I wonder if there’s some jpg compression going on that’s messing with it.

          Edit the one someone added elsewhere in this post with the nature scene showed up for me within a few seconds.

      These are easier when they take up most of your visual field. So try moving your face closer to your screen.

        I only started being able to see them a few months ago. Maybe the trick you haven’t heard is that , you know sometimes you can purposefully get double vision when you stare at the wrong distance ? try doing that when you look at the picture.

        I don’t, either. I think the prescriptions for my two eyes are so far out of sync that my brain isn’t good at putting together information from both eyes at once. I’ve got a distance eye and a close-in eye.

          It disappears when the image is scaled (like many lemmy interfaces do). Make sure you look at the plain image without zooming.

        I never could see the images either. I tried unfocusing my eyes and crossing them, everything people say to try, but it never worked. A friend of mine has one that is framed with a sheet of glass in front. The trick he taught me was don’t look at the picture and to focus on my own reflection in the glass. I did that and I saw dinosaurs! It was the very first time I ever saw one of these work.

        I still can’t see the one in this post though. I need the pane of glass to see my reflection to get it to work lol

          Oh now that makes sense! You would defocus of the painting and it comes in. Now to find one in glass to test this out, thats gonna be a challenge!

            Any reflective surface should make it work, so if you see one framed give it a try. Hope it works for you because it was really cool when I saw it for the very first time.

                I totally get it! I couldn’t see any of them until I was in my mid 30s after years of not seeing anything. It’s pretty cool when you finally see it for the first time ☺️

        Let your eyes go out of focus and go a little crossed the slowly bring them back into focus until the image has depth. Once you master holding the half unfocused part then you will start to see an outline. Then hold it as long as you can so you can figure out what it is.

    These are called magic eye by many but are technically stereograms.

    Firstly it requires two working eyes. That can align together.

    So people with cross eye or a lazy eye can’t do these. Though these can be used to help such people train their eyes to work together better.

    They are easier to learn to do as a kid. Adults who never have successfully done the trick really struggle with it. But it’s not impossible to learn.

    Also. For some people they make people feel nauseous.

    Also. The more you practice the easier it gets.

    You build up an ability rather quickly because it’s muscles you already use. You are just learning to "decouple accommodation and vergence "

    By this I mean. When you look at something with both eyes, they converge together at that point in space. The angles of each eye meets.

    Accommodation in vision refers to how the lens in your eye (the one behind the iris, not the cornea) changes in shape to focus light. Like how a focusing ring on a camera works.

    Vergence and accommodations are synergistically linked. Meaning the often influence one another and function together. Each providing feedback to other to tune that ability to look at something with both eyes and it be brought to focus.

    Here is how it relates to stereograms.

    The trick to see them is to disconnect your accommodation from vergence.

    Your eyes must converge to a point farther away than the actual location of the image. But accommodation must match the actual image location.

    You are looking farther away yet your eye is focusing on the image. So it’s clear and not blurry.

    You can also do this where the vergence is in front of the image but that’s way harder and took me a while to get the hang of it. It also causes more eye strain. These magic eye images are not intended to be viewed that way.

    Now that you know the mechanism , this might help you figure out tactics to see the image.

    Essentially it looks like 3d objects covered in wall paper pattern. There aren’t any surface details. Just 3d shapes.

      Somehow I can only do them cross-eyed. I know with most of them are supposed to focus the eyes behind the image, but that never worked for me properly. I think I see the shapes “cut out” of the image rather than “poking out”…

    I can’t do it with my glasses on. So, that means I need to get close to the monitor because I’m near-sighted, which means I need to make the image smaller. Once I do all that, I can see them.

    I don’t know what’s changed, because the first time I saw one was as a print displayed at a mall, probably 35+ years ago.

    Some are easier to see than others. I find the ones with a bigger pattern image like wallpaper, rather than the small dots are easier.

      This kind of illusion is autostereoscopic 3D, it works a bit like the 3DS did but instead of a physical parallax barrier you’re kind of gaslighting your brain’s visual system into processing the image ‘wrong’ in a way which produces the stereoscopic effect.

      You have to relax your eyes completely, don’t try and see anything consciously or you’ll focus normally. There’s a bit of a knack to it, apparently bright light helps but to be honest I never saw them until one time after totally relaxing my eyes it just ‘clicked’ and I could do it after that. The illusion is quite sensitive to the distance between your eyes and the pattern, you have to be quite close and the exact distance seems to vary for me.
