From the early 1960s, Sainte-Marie claimed Indigenous Canadian ancestry, but a 2023 CBC News investigation concluded she was born in the United States and is of Italian and English descent.

Don’t totally love the song for its lyrical content, but it is in fact a Standard american folk song. Cripple creek is to banjo as Mary had a little lamb is to piano. (Remains so today.) I think she could’ve been classy enough to pick a different verse then
