I want to play StarCraft the RTS where the units are controled by humans playing StarCraft the FPS

I really hope we get a new version of this at some point. It’s such a good game, and it still has players after so long. It won’t get a large fresh influx without a new entry though.

The lore for NS is much more prominent on Subnautica 2, so I’m slightly hopeful the plan is for NS3 after Subnautica 2.

I remember the first marketing for CnC Renegade. It was exactly that, a dude running and building the base as a commander with all the units being other players.

To bad that never happened, even though it was still a fun FPS.

Battlefield tried it a bit with the commander system in BF4. As that role was more RTS than anything.

I’m reminded of when Fallout went from RTS/RPG to FPS or “Action RPG”.

As someone who can’t really do RTS (sorry!), I liked Fallout better afterward. I liked unrestricted movement and exploration and being able to shoot on my terms, not having to take turns.

Anyway, the game that inspired Fallout, Wasteland, got a huge influx of fans, a big glow-up (I think it got a remaster?) and then two modern sequels. They still used the top-down turn-based engine. When the big player sold out and left, some of the smaller players stepped up.

StarCraft hasn’t had a release in decades (I could be wrong, I always sucked at it in the 90s), but it’s got a lot of fans, who have been playing other games. It’s time for those games to step up and fill the void.

Also, fuck Bliz-“You all have phones, don’t you?”-zard.

Something interesting is also happening now. There’s a rumor that InXile, the devs of Wasteland, have been asked to make a new Fallout game. I’m hopefully that it’ll be a return to the classic style. However, the latest game they’re working on, Clockwork Revolution, is a first person game, so I think it’s likely it’ll be in the modern style. Still, they have been better at writing Fallout than Bethesda has, even when it wasn’t called Fallout.

So, you’re saying both Obsidian and inXile are making separate Fallout games? Or you think they’re working together, maybe?

Either way, it’s interesting, because both studios employ veterans of classic Fallout games.

The rumour is separate games. There’s very little to the rumour right now, but it does exist. It could be nothing.

Remastered came out in 2017 though…does it not count for some reason?

Can’t argue that. I just didn’t know about the remaster. I might have heard about it.

Always a risk posting “I’m not a fan but” in a fan community when you have something to say. I don’t mind being corrected — I do like to learn, especially when I’m wrong about something. Like the discussion about RTS vs RPG. I’m letting that lie because those folks made solid points, there’s really nothing else to say there. Strategy really isn’t my bag, so it’s cool to learn there are depths to it that I wasn’t aware of.

I’m reminded of when Fallout went from RTS/RPG to FPS or “Action RPG”.

I guess you’re talking about the turn-based combat of the first two Fallout games, but RTS stands for Real-Time Strategy, which Fallout never was.

I didn’t mind the perspective shift in Bethesda’s Fallout games, and while there wasn’t a fully fledged turn-based combat option, at least V.A.T.S. let you slow things down if you weren’t that into fast-paced shooting. I do feel like the writing, and consequently, the role-playing took a significant hit after Bethesda’s acquisition of the franchise.

I have relatively fond memories of 3, although I’ve never replayed it since its initial release. 4, on the other hand, I’ve tried at least three times to play through, and I always end up giving up and uninstalling. The simplified dialogue system and lack of nuanced options just kill any sense of immersion or investment in the world. I don’t care about crafting my own little wasteland town, I want to actually give a shit about the story and characters.

Anyhow, this is all off-topic—I really have no interest in a StarCraft FPS—so pardon my rant, and have a great day and/or night.

So, what’s the difference between RTS and what the first two Fallout games did? Where every move and attack is paid for out of set points that replenish every turn (and can also be affected by various factors, such as your Agility skill).

I realise Fallout is not classified as an RTS, but it behaves like one. I know you aren’t moving a multitude of troops, but it acts the same way and, while it’s fine for others, it’s not really how I wanna play a game.

I’m pretty sure Turn Based Tactics is the genre you’re looking for. It’s turn-based, not real time, and also it’s tactics, not strategy (strategy is long term planning, and tactics is what’s involved in a particular engagement).

Yeah RTS stands for “REAL-TIME strategy”, as in “specifically not turn-based” like many strategy games were when the term was coined.

And those 3 words together are a term now, with an established meaning. If it wasn’t, you could argue about the “strategy” part, but then you could just as well argue that the new Fallout games are RTS - after all, it’s real time and there’s some strategy involved about where you go next, what you take with you, etc.

Real-Time Strategy is explicitly not turn-based; things progress continuously without pausing. Warcraft 1-3, StarCraft 1 and 2, and the Command & Conquer series are all examples of RTS games. The other major strategy genre is TBS (Turn-Based Strategy) e.g. your Crusader Kings or your Civilization.

As the Fallout games (exclusive of Brotherhood of Steel) aren’t strategy games, but RPG’s, I’m not sure if there’s a widely used initialism for the way combat works in the first two Fallout games— maybe TBC (Turn-Based Combat), although to me that evokes The Burning Crusade. Bethesda’s Fallout games, arguably, have a variant of RTwP (Real-Time with Pause) combat, via the V.A.T.S. system.

Turn Based Tactics is the genre I think. I don’t know when the last time I heard that genre be used by name though.

It can be an RPG and other genres. They are RPGs, but they’re also parts of many other genres.

What you just described is simply not an RTS. RTS is StarCraft and Age of Empires. There are no turns. Fallout does not behave like an RTS in any sense.

What you are describing is a TBS like Civ maybe or TB Tactics like XCOM which yes there are elements in the latter to pretty much any TB RPG, or really any old school RPG where you kind of free explore the world but then combat becomes turn based.

The flipside of what you’re saying, and one could say this but one perhaps shouldn’t without a good shield, is that Civ is a TB RPG…
