Honestly feels like it. It’s incredible how actual good free software projects are always struggling for money, then one nazi comes in and vibe codes a bunch of dotfiles bundled with an Arch installation and suddenly he’s showered with money non-stop and becomes news everywhere in the FLOSS world.

What is omarchy?
It’s an archlinux remix that focuses on a “hacker aesthetics”. That’s a bit cringe but wouldn’t be a big deal in itself. It was made by a rich fascist.
Open source has gotten more visibly queer and the reactionaries love to pretend that this some sort of invasion when it’s often people who have worked on these projects for decades. Omarchy is now at the center of an effort to make open source white, male and straight “again”.
Real ones remember archcraft as the nerdy souped up WM arch install that was made by a single guy as a side hustle. Omarchy are real yuppies by comparison.

Yeah, not sure who’s even decent anymore after being with DO since near their inception. Hetzner keeps coming up and they seem nice but they’re EU focused.
At least have everything containerized these days so ripping it out’s NBD.

They doubled the prices for everything a few months ago
I just got my bill and it’s still ~$17 for my 2 vps instances. One of them is basically idle right now, but the flat rate seems to have stayed the same.

BuyVM (aka Frantech) is a small hosting company that has been pretty good in my experience. They have really cheap block storage and reasonably cheap VPSs. They often sell out quickly (right now they’re out of all the lower tier offerings), but they usually restock at 9am on weekdays and if you’re willing to wait a week or so it’s doable to get one. I started renting servers from them almost 10 years ago because they’d give a 1tb block storage drive you can attach to the VPS for just $5/mo.

a cheaper one that I haven’t tried personally is GalaxyGate, you can get 2 GB ram for $5/month there
I’ve been using tierhive as a NAT vps and it’s 5 dollars a year for a simple wireguard router that connects to physical hardware you have + gratis static hosting.
If you don’t need a static IP address it’s a perfect solution.
Pangolin is another good one to use on your VPS. I don’t want to pay for the beefy ones, so I just expose a computer to Pangolin running on my VPS and you get automatic auth and ssl.

DigitalOcean is pledging $3 million to Omarchy, joining the Omacom Foundation as a Founding Corporate Patron.
The deal will provide $1 million per year for three years, bringing Omacom Foundation’s total reported funding to around $18.5 million.
But the announcement has drawn attention for another reason. Just last month, DigitalOcean reportedly ended its sponsorship of GNOME and Flathub infrastructure, which was worth around $50 per month.
That means roughly $600 a year in canceled sponsorship compared with $1 million a year now going toward Omarchy.
There’s no evidence that money was directly shifted from GNOME or Flathub to Omarchy, but the contrast has sparked discussion across the Linux community.
Omarchy is still a relatively new, niche Linux distribution, yet it has attracted millions in funding in a remarkably short time. Meanwhile, long-established open-source projects often struggle to fund developers and infrastructure.
The growing Omarchy funding will support full-time developers, infrastructure, artists, grants, and other open-source projects that the distribution depends on.
