The US was settled by several Christian versions of the Taliban. They still seek to control by religious edict while not living it themselves. Nudity, sex, women as people are all problematic for them.
Vastly different cultures. Even within Europe.
Some sexualize nudity, others don’t.
Puritans
The colonizers that founded America (the puritans) were the people from Europe that hated sex and nudity.
The love of violence came later, but was the American will ever since manifest destiny and the Monroe Doctrine.
As an American born in 1980, we’ve always been the crazy ones.
The USA is a country rich in history for developing crackers and breakfast cereal to prevent masturbation.
Most US kids will see a brain exploding from a headshot long before they are allowed to see a nipple
“Boom, Headshot!” comes long before “Boom, Head” in the US, sadly.
Culture.
Americans are equally terrified of and obsessed with nudity and sex.
I think Americans are mostly terrified of European nihilism and don’t want to fall into the same trap.
no. they’re afraid of thinking for themselves.
How does “European nihilism” manifest in a way I can examine?
Are you European? Do you think nothing matters? I have been around far too many Europeans that think that way and definitely do not look towards Europe for what I want America to be. Is it the desensitization of nudity? Probably not alone. But it’s one tiny piece of the nihilistic puzzle.
Look, you have it, you enjoyed it, and now it’s no longer a big deal. In other words, you no longer enjoy it like you once did. We’d rather not go that way. Everything in moderation. We’ll save the cyberpunk dystopia for another day.
Europeans don’t think nothing matters, where did that come from? They just don’t all think sex and nudity are shameful or evil. A positive approach is not the same as nihilistic or desensitized or whatever.
What the actual fuck are you talking about
If you think that a particular thing matters a lot, and other people think that thing doesn’t matter at all, then clearly they’re nihilistic degenerates.
And just like that, suddenly Alles Scheiße is no longer cool, go figure.
Europeans are the masters of nihilism. It’s kind of honestly surprising your birth rates aren’t lower. We have our own growing culture of nihilism to battle and we certainly don’t need it harder.
Americans are far from prudes, but there’s a place and a time for nudity. If we allowed public nudity in advertisements, half of our billboards would turn into porn. If you don’t believe me, look at any state that’s legalize marijuana: it seems literally half of all advertising is for weed. Maybe if we didn’t have hyper aggressive market forces we could relax our laws a bit.
Mostly overly religious people.
I’d imagine the Hays Code also had an effect on this.
Because US is prude.
The people who settled America were puritans who were hung up on sex, while Europeans are more normal about it
Yeah, but it’s bigger than that. The dutch sent all of their religious extremists here for instance, they rounded them up at church one sunday and herded them onto ships at the point of a bayonet.
A lot of religious crazies came here, and helped convert more weak minded fools while here. Evangelicals being the main problem now.
They were fleeing religious persecution, because everyone was sick of their shit.
Hopefully Musk will start a Mars colony soon so they have some new place to flee to.
More normal… still kinda weird though.
In a way “kinda weird” is still normal. People in real life are kinda weird, we have different things we like, not just missionary position for the purpose of procreation. There’s collars and vegetables used in non-culinary ways, toe-sucking and fantasies and handcuffs, etc. Normal people often do kinda weird stuff.
True but this is the bad kind of weird in my personal opinion. Much of Europe is still quite puritanical–it’s just by comparison to other places they appear enlightened.
Religious nut jobs.
Because England and Western Europe kicked out the prudiest of the prudes half a millennium ago and our cultures evolved accordingly.
Save for Spain. Nobody expected that.
No one expects the Spanish Inquisition

On the contrary, the Spanish Inquisition would generally give a 30 day written warning before showing up.
Our chief weapon is surprise! And a ruthless efficiency. Our TWO chief weapons . . .
What do you mean save for spain? The colonists and later the US residents HATED the dons, which is what the aristocracy of the spaniards were known.
Aaron Burr actually was trying to mount a private invasion of mexico to make himself emporer of it when his political rival, Thomas Jefferson, whom he lost the presidency to by one vote, (electors, eatch congressaman and senator got an elector back then,) and instead was elected vice president prior, (second highest vote getter for prez was vp then,) had him arrested and charged under false charges to get rid of his rival.
Burr remarked prior to all of this that jefferson moralized on all subjects yet was a piece of shit in his own life, I’m paraphrasing.
Anyway, the trial was a spectacle, Andrew Jackson came in on Burr’s side, (Jackson was even more of a piece of shit than jefferson but that’s another story.) There was a big camp on Burr’s side. One notable purposefully bumped into jefferson’s hack supporter on the street during the trial, made a scene, and challenged him to a duel. Shit was hot. Burr got a not guilty verdict. Forget where the trial was but I think fed court in virginia but don’t quite recall.
In this case, it really is just because Americans are prudes.
The home of Hustler magazine, Bill Clinton, and Traci Lords?

Have you seen their American versions in comparison to the European ones?
Berlusconi is both European Clinton and what Trump wishes he was.
There can be exceptions to the rule, but there are plenty of indicators with problems occurring in the current film and video game markets that spell out Americans would sooner let children see graphic violence than the hideous abomination that is the human nipple.
A lot of Americans have shitty, immature, views on sexuality and the human body.
I remember some coworkers and I chatting about it, and two of them both said they’d rather their kid watch a movie where someone got shot in the head than one where someone received oral sex.
They probably went home and then watched someone getting head on porn hub
That’s not a contradiction, though. They genuinely believe it’s bad for children specifically and ok for adults. And I’d argue that overexposure to sexuality can be bad for children. But I’d also argue there are big differences in the sexuality depicted, the form of the depiction itself, and the age of the child.
I’d argue that overexposure to sexuality can be bad for children.
I’d argue that overexposure to typical porn can be bad for unsupervised children. Sexuality… not so much.
If you look closely enough at the FCC, you’ll see it’s just three mormons in a trenchcoat.
FCC?
Yeah, Frank, Christopher, and Carson. They like to get together after Sacraments and dress up in one large trench coat. It’s very silly.
“Federal Communications Commission”. It’s a U.S. agency. Originally established to make sure radio broadcasters play nice with the “commons” that is the radio frequency spectrum. They’re the ones who maintain the rules about who is allowed to broadcast on what wavelength and such. Radio and TV stations have to register with the FCC. WIFI wavelengths are under the FCC’s jurisdiction. That sort of thing.
But they decided that their jurisdiction also extends to deciding what’s too “obscene” to be allowed to be broadcast over the air waves. Cable TV is out of scope because the signal travels over wires rather than over radio waves, and so in the U.S. the rules for cable are much more lenient.
But yeah. Any content made for TV that would go over radio waves (even if it also goes over cables) basically has to follow FCC’s rules for morality. And they’re pretty strict. Such shows can’t say “shit” or “cock” or “pussy” whatever. (Though the FCC is kind enough to make exceptions for if you’re unambiguously referring to a rooster when you say “cock” etc.) And they can’t show anyone flipping the bird without blurring the offending hand.
Lots of artists and content make reference to how strict the FCC is. For instance, I think this is a song from Family Guy about that (but YouTube says it’s “inappropriate for some users” and I have to log in to confirm my age, but fuck that.) I think the FCC is even a running joke on Family Guy. Also, Eminem’s song “Without Me” also says “the FCC won’t let me be, won’t let me be me so let me see. They try to shut me down on MTV…”. (Though when it comes to Eminem, they may have a point. Lol.)
I’ve always wondered about that line, since MTV is cable channel and not actually regulated by the FCC.
I suspect “MTV” rhyming with “FCC” and “let me be” and “me be me” was worth more than technical correctness.
The FCC did try to “shut Eminem down.” There was an incident where a radio station played a sanitized version of his song “The Real Slim Shady” and the FCC still fined the radio station claiming even the “clean” version was still too indecent for broadcast.
The whole thing had nothing to do with “MTV”, but yeah.
Marshall Mathers is a piece of shit, but yes all correct.
Federal Communications Commission - The US federal organization responsible for approving broadcast content since 1934.
The Federal Communications Commission. It’s a US government agency that regulates all communications broadcasts (TV, radio, Internet, satellite, etc.).
What’s the difference? I’ve seen American and European movies and didn’t notice any striking differences in their approach to nudity or sex.
