Pickled all my garden beans, was gonna save some by freezing for a family dinner, but the recipe I used called for 1.5lbs, and well I had exactly 700grams, so I used them all.
I mostly followed this recipe, with some modifications, that I got from another post earlier this week.
I doubled the sugar, and put 4 cloves in each jar instead of 2 for all. I don’t like vinegar that much, so hopefully these are more dilly and garlic.
I’ll see how they turned out in a week!

They look good.

That colour didn’t last long, I heard cooking them would take it away though.
That’s such a shame because they looked so beautiful in the jars raw .
I was quite surprised with how striking the purple was, now the pickling liquid is maroon and the garlic has taken on quite the blue colour. Reminds me of blue cheese a little too much >.<
This is so cool. Thanks for sharing, hoping to do the same with some cucumbers later this year.
Mine unfortunately have only started flowering, and they’re barely 15cm tall. With frost being a potential concern starting in 2 weeks, I don’t see me getting any.
Well bummer, I’m in the southeast US where I have the 90+ degree F (35C) heat roasting my veggies…its been a wild year, hoping for cooler weather in a couple of weeks.
We just had that 2 weeks ago, but it can still get up to the temp in September too though.
30c during the day, but risk of frost every night. But seasonal frost isn’t till the end of Sept.
Growing season on “average” is May 28 to Sept 28 ish. So hence my 60 day bush beans being ready if they are planted beginning of June.
I hear yah. Challenging growing conditions, but that just makes the yield more enjoyable 🤠 I ended up installing three green houses to house my plants through the winter and extend the growing season. We drop to -7c during the winter but out daily temperature swings aren’t as wild as yours lol
Greenhouses are on my list to get or build. I’ve gotta rip up my garden beds for one, and the other is by grass. So I’m building some pathways and flower beds to hold the sod and dirt so I can work than refill those areas.
We get a rather unique whether phenomenon called Chinooks, during the winter, it can make the temp go from -20c to +20c in a matter of hours, before plummeting again. That’s not even climate change related.
I believe if you’re in northern US you get the tail end, called an Alberta clipper I think?
@SchmidtGenetics @BuckFutter we get them along the foothills of the colorado Rockies where i have lived most of my life things are changing though we are 2 zones warmer than in the 1’960"s.
Interesting, I wonder if they’re as intense though. Even an hour drive to our south they’re completely different, the winds of 100km/h can just melt the snow as you enjoy a beer. It’s crazy. After that little area it tapers off in strength again. But it could also fluctuate again, idk. I just read stuff that’s interesting.
Good luck with the projects. They can be a bit of fun :) before the regime change in the US, aliexpress had some decently priced green houses for under $2000 USD, just had to bolt them together. Who knows now what it costs now.
Yah I was familiar with the weather events, didn’t know they had a fancy name though. We get something similar to those in the southern states of the US. Definitely not that extreme temp swing when our fronts come through, closer to 20C swings. Although we have had snow this past two years which is wild for living near the Gulf coast. Thanks for sharing.
My sister got a decent one from Costco for 3k, and that’s about what I was eyeing for a decent one on sale on Amazon, gas actuated temp ceiling vent even!
I’m a red seal carpenter, so designing and building one isn’t out of the cards, just a matter of time and convenience sometimes. Well and costs, it’s easier to go buy a couple hundred dollars of lumber a dozen times than to drop 3k as well.
Kids and animal obligations don’t allow much else other than a few hours putzing, so it’s great I can get a little hard yard work done.
No worries, it’s always interesting knowing about this stuff, and than finding out later it’s all related. I made some post complaining about a chinook, and someone complained blaming me for the Alberta clippers. Everyone learned something haha.

Delicious!
@pieguy@lemmy.sdf.org loves them
Did you say something about beans?
Yum!
Those purple teepee beans? I grew some in the garden last year! They’re lovely and delicious. Enjoy!
Grabbed them just because.
I don’t see them in my online orders, so most likely a Home Depot grab instead.
