My computer desktop was really dusty an cluttered and I didn’t had much space, so I dusted everything and reorganized everything to have a little more space.

There’s something nice about having a basic setup that you can just tear down and rearrange on a whim. Most importantly, there’s less to go wrong :|

    Nano > Vim. Fight me.

Do you know every Nano keybind or just the ones you need to use everyday? You don’t need to know hundreds of keybinds to use Vim.

Fair, but the keybinds for the basic functions like saving or copy/paste are simpler in Nano. I guess Vim doesn’t really use keybinds so much as it uses commands?

I would argue that Vim is simpler, I mean, to enter edit mode the “keybind” is just i, save is w, quit is q, save and quit is… well… wq, to copy you use yy, to paste you use p. Sure, it’s not the standard Ctrl+[Shift]+S/C/X/V, however it is still simple in it’s own context, and far more powerful and composable, as many keybinds can be modified to operate on a number of lines (for example dd will delete a line, d<num>d will delete <num> number of lines from the cursor).

Mhh, I guess I’m just used to the ol’ Ctrl+x stuff from using Windows for so long… I’ll have to give Vim another go

the best part about learning vim, at least the basic movement and operations, is that pretty much every good application that involves text has a vim mode/plugin which means what you learn can also be used outside of CLI.

learning it takes time, i started with basic movement and then each week incorporated a new command into my workflow. it really does make text manipulation faster, but also if you don’t modify text frequently then yeah nano is fine or in a GUI Kate is also great (has a good vim mode and you get a gui so you won’t get stuck).

It was a bit to get used to for me as well, I switched fully to Linux around 2020, prior to which I had many years of Windows intuition. I literlally just started with using no fancy features or trying to be a Vim power-user, basically the only keybinds I used where i, w, q, and wq, I learnt dd organically, and have just been learning the odd trick here and there. I still use about 1% of Vim’s total capacity, but I already vastly prefer it over Nano for features aside from those behind keybinds. I still turn on mouse mode on Vim, I still use the arrow keys rather than h/j/k/l, but it gets me through my day painlessly.

Nah, Nano is great too. I just find Vim a lot more comfortable to work once you learn the keybinds.

But I get Nano is more intuitive and easy to use, most of my classmates use it when they use the terminal to edit text instead of Vim, and that’s fine.

Nice. Like the coffee mug. And the table has coffee color as well… I just got a bigger desk with enough room to push all the clutter to the sides 😅

Sometimes it’s better to have some limitations to don’t give away to the clutter (too much).
