It’s hardly ever used by anyone, but it’s an open-source alternative to YouTube. It has several instances and whatnot, but I wonder if anyone here has used it.
Personally, no. As much as I’d love to, the problems people talk about ( discovery, lack of content, etcetera ) kinda keep me away.
It was a similar problem for the short stint I was on odysee before dropping that platform. The comments on certain videos from someone I watched basically calling him an Indian n-word didn’t help keep me either, but that’s a bigger can of worms I’m not jumping into.
I think the closest I’ve come is watching a video on a furry instance on dead furry conventions. Otherwise, I wouldn’t even know if there’s anything that would really appeal to me.
Sadly, until we get bigger creators onto the platform, even as just a backup solution, I don’t think adoption of Peertube will gain much attraction outside of niche people in the grand scheme of internet usage.

I would love for it to take off or even reach the level of things like lemmy but it hasn’t and it wont until content creators take it seriously.
As of now theres not much besides looney toons conspiracy theories or blatant racism/sexism on there and I have no interest for that sort of anti-intelectual psuedo-science.

you know, what could work to promote it: porn. remember when some non-porn creators turned to pornhub, because yt and other sites sucked? it could work out like that. there’s even an old song about the internet being for porn. porn could keep it afloat until it takes off.

It’s sort of suffers from the same thing as the rest of the fediverse. I watch some content on there. There’s Veronica explains and control alt Reese. But like most of the fedivers right now it’s very techy and very niche. The fact that you generally can’t find a good instance to post to if you’re not already running it doesn’t help either. Then there’s the issue of discovery. Although that’s actively being worked on and I’ve seen some good progress recently. And then there’s a skyrocketing cost of storage. Even if someone like the world Foundation might like to try to set up a more general purpose and open instance. I don’t think there’s any way they could afford storage. So unfortunately I don’t see it taking off anytime soon. But maybe someday if things ever straighten out again. After the billionaire barbecue.
Nick from The Linux Experiment posts his videos on TILvids, a peertube instance, and as such they pop up on my fediverse feed, actually making me more likely to watch them than on YouTube. But otherwise, unfortunately, I don’t run into that much content worth watching on PeerTube, so I end up having to revert to YouTube (with Adblock and SponsorBlock).
Also, I sometimes worry about the whole Peer to peer aspect. The reason people who torrent usually get busted is because they serve the content they downloaded to others, which is legally often a bigger issue than simply downloading stuff. Since PeerTube works the same way, I worry that I unknowingly watch something that is somehow covered by some copyright I wasn’t aware of and some legal office tries to make my life hell.
Just use a VPN?
Then I’d have to start using a VPN every time I use PeerTube - that would be a major PITA.

Yes I do, though as most people explained there are only quite niche contents available : for me it’s tech videos and french indie news channels (either from their official peertube instance either from unofficial mirrors). But honestly they produce so much content that i could watch only this, it’s just when i need less complicated or less politicized videos that i go elsewhere.
There are a few rough edges but i like the option to subscribe from a distant instance (so that when you open the native link of another instance, you can still (relatively) easily link it to your home account). I believe i also managed to subscribe from Piefed, so i have videos popping up in my piefed feed.

we watched all of MLPFiM in one mirroring instance. I believe anime is also on peertube.I try to check it out every now and then, but none of the videos I see intrigue me enough to watch.
Yuh baybeee, it’s alright. There are some instances that have less strict moderation (but the same rules) on copyright content so you can upload videos you don’t own if you find them.
Also Newpipe can open links as a frontend but it can also open Invidious which I’m finding I prefer for now.
I’ve been really enjoying Newpipe and invidious. Honestly though, I would really rather just have Newpipe for Linux and Windows. A little portable desktop client would be amazing.
