It’s why I found it a bit shocking. Similar events are unfolding in Canada and if we’re to benefit from this spending, especially given it’s coming at the expense of cutting pensions and such, we have to hold these cronies accountable. Boot them from office if they don’t comply.
This is one way how Russian (and Chinese) disinformation works. First, Europe (and Canada and others, whatever the context is) is too dependent on the US and thus weak. If Europe and others invest more in their security, it comes at the expense of social welfare. ‘Europe bad’ again.

Long story short: Very, for a variety of reasons. There are many capabilities we simply do not have (yet), even when you include the ones we just straight up buy from the US.
That said, this does not mean there is no codependence. If Europe stopped cooperating with US military contractors today, much of their production would collapse, because they would have to replace countless non-standard parts.
The article didn’t mention how much arms manufacturing increased in Europe during the same period. If this increase was greater than US imports, then we have moved towards independence, and US imports can decrease as the rate of the military build up decreases.
The numbers are there.
When the share of USA imports increased from 52% to 64% from one 5 year period to the next, our dependence has clearly gone up, and the share of our own production is reduced from 48% to 36%.I was reading it as the import doubled and the US share increased to 64% of the imported arms. But you must be correct because the other countries that EU is importing from must have a very small share compared to US.
There have been a lot of new developments in the last one and a half years that makes this article highly irrelevant I would say. And there were many posts here in this as well as in other comms about it.
Are we talking about actual dependence or the one actively created by politicians?
“We refuse to buy from our neighbours (as they could be considered more direct competition) and prefer to buy US even if it’s stupid and more expensive because their lobbyists pay well” is no real dependence but just European countries beig the usual corrupt cesspools.
