Egotistical people have a way of completely failing to absorb information about the thought processes and motives of others even when explicitly explained. I knew just such a person once and we would regularly have conversations that went along the following lines:
Him: “Why do you think/do A?”
Me: “For reasons X, Y, and Z.”
Him: “Okay, but why do you think/do A?”
