Western Germany has a really weird culture with regards to renting and debt.
The debt aversion, i strongly agree with. The preference for renting, not at all. Especially when renting in Germany does not come with a furnished apartment, and you need to drag your entire furniture and kitchen with you to every new place you move into. Whoever thought that was a good idea deserves the gulag.
Maybe I have a different perspective as an immigrant, but even though renting is so impractical (moving furniture and especially the kitchen, 3 months rent as a damage deposit, nothing to call your own in the end, etc.), I have understood that society in general still prefers it at least equally to ownership, and this going back some decades as well. Germans also just accept a lot of really inconvienient things because “es ist einfach mal so.” But maybe I am completely off base. I also live in a more expensive area in terms of cost of living and home prices which does change behaviour.

Liberalism is such a clownshow that even if Soviets did install listening devices to the homes of their citizens they would still end up looking better, because we still have those on capitalist states (internet of things), except they cost a boatload of money and sometimes companies decide they don’t want to operate the service anymore but still collect your data!
if you have western friends then you know that owning is just not something they consider at all most of the time. renting just doesnt give you any security.
The numbers in the West seem a bit exaggerated. I would’ve thought the numbers were lower. I also wonder about the percentage of those homeowners that are on a mortgage.
Numbers are most likely way lower among the youth, my brother went to Germany for work and apparently they consider owning a home completely impractical.
They often do consider owning a home impractical. Renter protections are ok but it’s still a very illogical thing.
