eBay and three former executives agreed to pay nearly $56 million in a settlement over a macabre campaign of cyberstalking and harassment that targeted two journalists in 2019.
As we’ve previously written, the case involved deliveries of live cockroaches, a funeral wreath, a book about surviving the loss of a spouse, and a bloody pig mask to the home of a couple who run a news website. There were also harassing messages sent via email and Twitter, and an attempt to install a GPS tracking device on the victims’ car. Criminal charges resulted in guilty pleas and prison terms for former eBay employees.

i know ebay is like the standard for selling random shit and has been forever, but i only ever used it once.
like 20+ years ago i wanted to buy a weird phone i could only find on ebay. i paid with my card, it was a scam (no phone, ghosted), so i did a chargeback and that was the end of it. i forgot about it, more or less, after that. except like 6 months later some detective called me to confirm some details because the person had apparently gone bananas ripping people off and the detective was seeing if it all added up to like grand larceny or whatever.
since the service was 0 for 1 for me in just buying something, i never bothered to fuck with it again. i know its like a whole way of life for some people to be on there, sniping and relisting, or just selling their wares, but that all sounds so tedious to manage.
this article makes it sound like the execs of ebay are as much total freakbomb weirdos as any of their users.
Was hit or miss for a while, got some cool stuff on ebay a decade ago but even at that point it was dying. A lot of counterfeit goods marked up
I’ve successfully purchased a few things on eBay, but I treat it like Kijiji or a yard sale.
The one thing I sold on eBay was my Cellebrite machine and eBay closed my account and seized the money seconds after I uploaded the tracking info from Canada Post.

Nah. They sold it off a while back. It’s really not very good but I hate the idea of using Facebook marketplace
It functions fairly well as a marketplace all things considered. I get like half of my books, clothing, tools, and random shit there. It’s a pretty shitty corporation, but that’s par for the course.
It’s generally worse to its sellers than its buyers.
