This is far from the first oil price shock, and we’ve known for decades that having so much transport relying on imported fuel is a bad idea. However, we never bother doing anything about it because as soon as the immediate crisis is over we forget about long term solutions like electrification. Now we’ve reached the “finding out” part of the phrase.

- US will be affected more than other countries, because Trump hasn’t actually been negotiating, and, he’s sabotaged so many negotiations that nobody wants to do business with him anymore.
- Solar will fry the grid, we’ll run out of diesel, elderly people will be harmed by paper bags, all of Australia will be destroyed by forest fires, victoria is “bankrupt”, etc.
Australia is in a different position to US. Here in Australia, our government wants to move off fossil fuels. In the US, yours is sabotaging renewables
In states like SA, there is already heavy use of Solar panels. Tasmania is almost entirely renewables

I’m Australian, so not from the US (had lived there briefly though) but that’s not true. The US is self sufficient in Oil and Gas at least, they literally don’t care. Their petro industries are making money hand over foot selling into the international market as are their peteo infrastructure companies.
The US is also working hard to steal Venezuela’s oil and while it is shitty oil, it is one of the biggest reserves on the planet.

Once again that’s not true at all, we are overly reliant on diesel more so then many developed countries because we’re too stupid to build electric railways to move shit around (laughingly we just cancelled the new inland rail and it never went to Brisbane port anyway) .
We’re overly reliant on aviation fuel for the same reason, we’re stupid, we’re a big empty country so it takes lots of energy to stupidly move stuff around which is perfect for trains, we do it in the most stupid way possible (trucks and planes)
The idiot Qld government has fast tracked a new oil field at Taroom and plan to build more refineries after we just finished closing refineries. New oil and gas licenses have been issued for Bass Strait and the massive gas fields off the WA coast are all going ahead.
The renewables you are talking about mean nothing much in terms of self suffiency because we have all the coal in the world and could have burned it for hundreds of years, we still export lots and lots of it. As a side note, Tassie has had hydro dams destroying the biosphere for 150 years.
We barely make a thing, so instead of building a railway between North WA and central QLD to ship coal and iron ore back and forward and then make steel, we ship iron ore and coal to China (who are supposedly our enemy ffs) they burn the coal and we buy steel off them. Once again relying on vast quantities of bunker fuel (shitty diesel) to move the ships around to do this dumb shit.
On top of all of that, the political party leading in the poles is ONP, who are all climate deniers and are committed to undoing the small token renewable energy changes we’ve made and aligning with other conservative nutjob parties in ascendency around the world to destroy civilisation.
26% of the new cars sold in June were EV’s, (not including the stupidity that is PHEV) just to point out that at least 70% of Australians are dipshits.
none of this is new though, in the 1970s the icon and ironic book Lucky Country pointed out we’re basically a bunch of fools (more interested in sports etc then the serious goings on in tbe world) led by idiots. that still applies (the irony was it was the book title was a sarcastic insult that we ran with as a compliment) Lucky to be endowed with vast natural resources.

And yes, 70% of people are dipshits if they’re still buying pure ICE cars. The real question is how many are PHEV, and whether they are considered ICE…
Also, you guys said we’d run out of fuel once. IT DIDN’T HAPPEN. The alarmist stuff doesn’t because our government tends to adapt… The only thing that happened is that our local donkeys hoarded fuel, so there was a temporary spike. And, ONP + Libs took a few photos next to some empty bowsers which were turned off, all whilst screaming “look, we’re out of fuel, and Labor is lying about the shipments”
The reason it won’t happen, is because that relies on our government sitting there, doing absolutely nothing…
Again, I’ve also already started to see woolies trucks which are EV’s now, and, seeing hybrids are growing increasingly common. I just hope we don’t subsidise fuel again.
