As someone who got a 12am Emergency Alert last night over what appeared to be a custody issue several hours away, it would be nice if the levels of alert below “Take Cover, You’re Going to Die” could be utilized for Amber Alerts and missing children, so that we can keep an eye out for them. These days I instinctively dismiss the alert before even reading what it says, then I open it when it’s not blaring because I totally missed the contents.

We had four mobiles going off at various points throughout the house. Only one human wasn’t sleeping, and everyone else was.

What the flappy fuck are they thinking we’re gonna do while we’re sleeping?

In a world where we canceled standard time because we didn’t want to suffer the injury risk of driving after the time change, how many injuries or deaths happened today because people got awakened at midnight and then some of us at 1am? How many of those deaths is worth what may have potentially been a risk in West Kelowna (the West Virginia of Kelowna - I say this as a GPSS student, upset at the name change)?

I hate to be a one-issue voter, but I may have found my one issue.

Not only that, but anyone with even a bit of tech sense and google pretty quickly disables them. I think there’s one dude left in the office who hasnt yet. Boy who cried wolf syndrome; if everything is an emergency, nothing is.

As a child, I took away from Boy Who Cried Wolf that you shouldn’t lie because it could eventually have dire consequences for you.

As an adult, I gotta be honest, I ask myself why not a single person would go check on the boy. Like, can you imagine if the police or paramedics didn’t show up to an actual life threatening emergency just because they didn’t believe it to be true?

Same. Then finding out that Americans can mute these things and the CRTC prevents IOS and Android from doing so in Canada was infuriating.

My phone now has an automation to go into airplane mode when it hits the charger at night. Fuck the CRTC for thinking they have any right to make decisions over my device.

Meh, we get a couple a year in my area. Its for the greater good of the fellow citizens. Today was nonstop in BC for us, with an abduction case. Yeah it was annoying and startling even after the 8th time, but if that message of the car and license plate gets one persons eyes on it, its with it.

There was a less fortunate case in the province before where mom abducted the kid from dad and was at risk. She murdered her kid and drove around with the kid stuffed in her trunk. We want to prevent those things.

Personally, I think the idea of sending a mass notification to all phones in the province to find an abducted or missing child, that’s fine.

It doesn’t have to be accompanied with a loud alarm tone, though. Anyone awake can still keep watch with a silent notif, and anyone asleep will not start looking for the people or car in question just because of the tone.

The loud alarm should only be for earthquakes, fire or tsunami evacuation, mass murderer at large or war situation. Since I’d immediately dismissed the alert, if it was serious, I could be dead if I didn’t go back to pull up message to know to take cover or evacuate.

But the depth of overcompensation in this entire virtue-signal of a boondoggle solution is huge.

      Ah, you’re in Vancouver too?

I somehow got it over the fucking fire alarm system in the building, screaming at 12 at night about an amber alert. It scared the fucking bejeezus out of us and was not helpful
