One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.

Right right, but we’re uncomfortable marginalizing them the same way we marginalize other women, so we have to invent new ways to treat them as second class citizens.

The only thing he’s kinda wrong about is the culture war being useless.

It’s insanely effective at getting assholes to vote for Republicans. It has become some scumbags entire identity

But you don’t understand! Some teacher in a school I’ve never heard of, in a city I’ve never been to told one of their students that its “OK” to be transgender. Therefore, I think we should defund the ENTIRE educational system.

      /s

I had to add the “/s” because I know idiots that say things exactly like this.

I stand by my conviction that the massive far-right propaganda machine that dominates social-media and television viewership is outright mind-control. It works less well on those who are educated, but it works well enough.

And then there’s people like my dad, a literal rocket scientist (retired now) who is a FOX News grandpa and a devoted MAGA loyalist. He should know better, but his media diet of fear, rage and culture bullshit is so sweet and tasty!

Consider the vectors in which the rot took hold and spoke to him. Usually it’s loneliness and lack of empathy for others, triggered by a tragic event in which he couldn’t understand. A lot of the maga sway resonates with anger and frustration. Like, I hate to say it, but it’s basically just the south park “dey tuk er jerbs” reaction, but on a global scale. In other words… He may have been a rocket scientist, but he’s… Apparently not well rounded in his intelligence. No worries, though, this is normal when you’re obsessive in a career. Unfortunately, this also indicates a low likely chance of remaining cognitive placidity for getting away from the magaism. The best thing you can do is to appeal to his humanity and get him away from the constant rhetoric and to start relying on his own personal judgement again. It’s unlikely you’ll recover him more than just grouchy old man with a conservative lean, but it’s heaps better than active maga. And all that assuming you still have that influence over him or will to even try. Going off your instance, though, I’m gonna guess not.

he probably grew up watching mostly fox, or had been since retiring. ive been reading on some posts on subs how thier children restrict thier parents fox, newsmax consumption because they are paying for cable. conservatives watch things that confirms thier biases and fears.

He was a contingency engineer during the Apollo missions. FOX News wasn’t around yet, but he was definitely a Reagan/Bush Republican and believed the welfare queen / DEA rhetoric.

Once FOX News pivoted from fair and balanced conservative news-casting to outright false propaganda, he absolutely got worse.

The weird thing is as a kid he taught me about news literacy, that you have to distill the facts of a story from multiple sources in order to see the bias of the news agency, and this was during a time that news media all came from big agencies that were motivated by profit. We didn’t yet have the independent news revolution that came with the internet.

I suspect now, FOX News is all he watches, since he sometimes leaks their talking points to me in conversations when they’re not appropriate. (Cult identity signalling. It’s a thing.)

For the record, it’s never transgender people. Maybe like once, ever in history.

There are people around on the internet actually keeping score, and the Republicans always try to say a person is queer or antifa or whatever, but it always ends up being a cishet Christian white chud, full of fail and hate.

And every time the truth comes out, it’s like, oh once again, it’s exactly who you actually expect, the gun toting, loud ass closeted self hating right wing dipshit, yelling about libtards and wokegenda and no true naziman, complaining about their skull shape and making excuses for their smol pp shame while trying to win points with daddy trumpy in hopes for a chance at a job at legally murdering a child or their neighbor.

Yeah but those are people in their in-group with authority. They can’t do any wrong because they said so.

Actually caring about child abuse or anything for that matter, over deference to authority would completely dismantle their worldview.

Tennessee could be a southern Vermont/Maine/New Hampshire if not for our political environment. The same chain of mountains that ties us all together and they are spectacular. This is one of the greenest states with amazing natural spaces.

I dont need full on tree hugging collectivism, I want us to respect women, respect individuals, support the impoverished, o wait do the basic things Jesus said to do in the bible.

I know most christians do a mix of cherry-picking and complete fabrication (what portion of christians do you think confuse dante’s inferno and paradise loss with the bible?). It’d be nice if they cherry-picked the Mark 10:21

Jesus looked at him and loved him. He told him, “You’re still missing one thing. Sell everything you have. Give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then follow me!”

      or the Matthew 25:40-46

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

But mostly they just use it as an excuse to be jerks. It’s a big book with ample support for that, but they could choose the nice parts.

I think more complaining, and then saying the reason their score was so low was because the grader knows more about science as reality than them. As an attempt in discounting the value of their low valuation.

culture war also distracts both sides too, its to inflame the left as well as conservatives. for conservatives its pretty easy, instert [woke] on whatever media its on. for left leaning people usually its to make them overreact on things like diversity (why this and this demo not getting treatment over this other demo person, oh why arnt they including more lgbtq+ representation in media , or poc) and yes its designed to distract top down issues, aka class war.

And then they make the point that everyone is trying to move to Tennessee so it can’t be bad. Like hey, I left my nice house to move into a roach infested ghetto because I’m so broke I can’t afford anything else, but it must not be bad since the less desirable location made it cheaper.
