I’ve been sick and tired for the 3 last days.
And for the 3 last days a salesperson came to my house. When my wife answered, she explained that I am not interested in changing my ISP (she trusts me on managing tech things such as this). He’d ask why and she’d say she doesn’t know. He’d say he’d come back because he wanted to speak with me.
On 2 evenings, when I was already in bed trying to sleep, he rang in a very annoying way. He’d keep his finger on the ringbell for a long time. Yesterday, he rang for a few minutes straight, 5-10 times, often keeping the finger on it for several seconds.
Today he came again, twice. Last time, my wife answered and called for me. I came and just told him that I am not interested, and thank you bye. I was about to close the door when he asked why. With all the annoying ringing he had done, this made me angry. I told him that I don’t want to answer and that he can go find a real job. He repeated after me and asked what was my job. Told him I wasn’t interested to engage and closed the door.
My wife pities him and told me I was mean to him.
I’m normally not like this with salespeople. I normally just try to make them understand there’s no point trying with me and that if they’re doing this work because they’re desperate I pity them.
But he was particilarly annoying. I would have been happy to just say I am not interested and end there but he had to press on after all the harassment.
What do you think?
EDIT: Replaced “hopeless” with “desperate” (better word in context)
You’re never the asshole when a solicitor is the other party.
Especially because what they did is a specific sales tactic: intentionally piss off one person in the house in hopes another resident feels bad - and invites in the solicitor.
Then, the solicitor has an emotional advantage in dealmaking.
Coming back repeatedly after being told to fuck off?
Guy deserves what he got. We have signs up saying “No Trespassing, No Solicitation, No Proselytizing”.
If you continue knocking on my door you better have a damn good reason.
Absolutely. If someone tries to sell something at the door, I ask for the company or product name, and then inform them that this company or product is now on my black list for soliciting.
Locally it’s either AT&T or people PRETENDING to be AT&T, not sure which.
NTA. Door to door salespeople are the worst. They bring their pitch to your front door, whether you like it or not. Fuck ‘em.
Being mean? I’d say you were exceptionally nice to him, given his persistence and annoying methods.
Also, wild (quaint) that your country still has door to door salesmen, especially for something like an Internet provider. Last time I saw one was in the 70s (and he did not come from an isp, lol).
I’m in Montréal, QC Canada.
I didn’t know there were countries without door to door salespeople.
Our door to door salespeople are almost always selling telecom.
NTA. You were sick and the salesperson was harrassing you and your wife.
NTA. Those are very extenuating circumstances. The guy was being extremely obnoxious and pushy. I get that people have to do what they can to pay the bills. But that kind of ultra-pushy approach is way out of line. That guy is why so many people despise door to door sales people.
I would have maybe felt a little bit of pity if he felt sad at what you said about him getting a real job. But he got confrontational. So meh.
Side note: securely placing a laminated sign by your front door telling people not to bother if they are selling something works very well in my experience. That alone has cut down the number of door to door sales calls by about 90%. And the remaining 10% have no excuse for any shouting they receive.

Also (while recording it) firmly and politely tell this salesman that he is no longer welcome anywhere on your property and must leave immediately.
If he comes back, call the cops because you have a trespasser.
If this is a true story and not entirely made up, then…
Yes, you were mean. Yes, you were entirely justified to be mean.
This isn’t sales, this is targeted harassment. Coming back multiple days in the row, abusing the doorbell? Who does that? By the third time, I would be setting up remote-controlled sprinklers pointed at the door to soak him if he comes back. And if he kept coming back after that, I’d answer the door holding a loaded shotgun I just happened to finish cleaning. (Not pointing it at him, mind you … but just to make a certain implication.)
I hesitated to post the story because of how mild it seemed to me. I’m surprised to see someone doubting its veracity. If it was fake for for karma farming, I think I would have put in violence with the salesperson and relationship fallout with my wife.
Not blaming you though, I understand the mistrust in our increasingly dead internet.
The salesman is trying to manipulate you emotionally, and potentially using your wife to accomplish that, and continuing to harrass you after you asked him to leave.
As someone with two young kids with early bedtimes, fuck solicitors. They’ve knocked on my door as late as 9 before.
He came to your home and disrespected you (and your wife). NTA, even if you were an asshole.
There’s an ISP that is trying to sell service in my area. They recently bought out an older ISP I used to have, or that one changed its name, I’m not sure. But they went from DSL to Fibre, and I’ve been iffy about them since I spoke to my current ISP while signing up. They said there were 2 Fibre lines coming into the town I’m in, one from one cardinal direction and the other, from the other. They own one and my previous Fibre ISP owns the other. So this other ISP? They gotta be leasing, which means either I’m paying more, or I’m paying the same/less and getting deprioritised or something like that. On top of all that, they were just in the news for shutting off service to a whole town, feigning ignorance when called, promising to fix it, and never actually doing so, getting people to keep paying until they got sick of it and cancelling. That’s actually what the other fibre service did to me, they just stopped providing the service until I got tired of it and stopped paying. They did discount my last month, but my wife refused to pay out of spite, and then the late fee hit and it basically went back up to what it was… she paid then. So that was our bad. But after seeing how the third fibre ISP did this other town, now when they come ringing, I ask them “well what about _____” and name the town. And they don’t have a good answer for me. So I tell them I need service I can depend on and the answer is a firm and final no. Honestly fuck that company. They took subsidies from taxpayers, basically took the money and ran. They will never see a dime from me. No one should support a company like that.
If I were you, I would have told him that calling late and ringing the bell in a borderline harassing way (maybe not so borderline!) took it from a maybe to a no. He’s already an uninvited guest, and if he’s annoying you right from the jump, you’re NTA for telling him no.
That said, when he asked what your job was, he’s engaging in a verbal altercation; at this point, you aren’t going to give him your financial information unless you’re a fool. You’re basically in a fight with this man, it just hasn’t come to blows yet, but he now knows where you live and he has you at a disadvantage in that regard.
To his defense, it wasn’t so late. I was in bed early because I was sick. It was in the evening in the sense that it was after normal work hours.
Dude intentionally harassed the household to monetarily benefit himself. Fuck him and his bloodline.
For salespeople of Indian origin (regardless if they are at the door or on the phone), you can always use the phrase “May your mother die a most slowly and horrible death.”
Ah, gotcha.
Next time, call the police on him.
Around here I just give the greenhorn solicitors a 10mm reason not to come back. Works ever time 😎y
You… throw sockets at them?
So thats where all the 10’s go.
…uhhh… did you still need those? 😳
It’s good that having such a small penis doesn’t give you poor self-esteem 👍
Im a transguy and this shit is actually suicide inducing to see every day online btw
