Amid the complex energy crisis facing the island, the Cuban government launched an accelerated plan to equip its vital health centers with solar technology.

The national program includes the installation of 5,000 photovoltaic systems donated by the People’s Republic of China, of which more than 2,600 are being prioritized for strategic institutions in the country’s 168 municipalities.

Each 2-kilowatt kit consists of solar panels, inverters, and storage batteries. This technical configuration is essential to ensure that medical equipment and medication refrigeration continue to operate autonomously during power outages.

Authorities from the Cuban Electric Union explained that this initiative seeks to diversify the energy matrix and strengthen resilience in a scenario marked by fuel shortages.

Beyond the hospital network , which includes more than 280 hospitals and 430 polyclinics , the project will also reach some 2,000 homes in isolated rural areas that have historically lacked stable access to electricity.

From the east of the country, specialists are making progress in assembling this equipment to protect services that are critical for the population.

This Cuban strategy aligns with the global trend of decentralizing energy to protect sensitive infrastructure , ensuring that basic sectors such as health and drinking water do not depend exclusively on the national grid in times of emergency.

In a context where the Donald Trump Administration took its “maximum pressure” strategy against Cuba to a breaking point, focusing its offensive on the total strangulation of the national energy system.

Washington imposed the oil blockade that targets any nation or shipping company that supplies crude oil to the island, a measure that the Cuban government denounced as a “collective punishment” that flagrantly violates international law and freedom of trade.

This energy blockade is having a devastating impact on the country’s critical infrastructure. With more than three months having passed without the arrival of tankers , electricity generation has plummeted to minimal levels, causing massive blackouts that not only leave homes without power but also paralyze vital services, plunging the population into a humanitarian crisis orchestrated from the Oval Office.

While the US president boasts to the press that he “could do whatever he wants” with Cuba and that the island is reaching the “end of the road,” reality shows a deliberate attempt to force a regime change through logistical strangulation.

However, analysts point out that this aggression against the Cuban electrical system also serves as a smokescreen for Trump , who is facing the stalemate of his war in Iran , the rejection of his European allies, and the rise in energy prices in his own country.

    I worry for Cubans. Don’t get me wrong, the way the Chinese are providing solar is downright heroic and undoubtedly saving lives, but this comes at a time when the US is expressing interest in taking over. These solar moves from China could be seen as a way of saying “Cuba is under our wing; dont go starting a boondoggle”, after which you know western leaders would immediately start a boondoggle.

    Cubans are under intense pressure, and im sure their people and leadership are struggling to navigate in a way that keeps Cubans safe while also minimizing risk of conflict.

      We all worry about Cuba. That’s why it is important to remember that we can help them in plenty of ways:

      • Humanize the Cuban people in your surroundings. Agitate in favor of them. Solidarity with the oppressed.
      • (If it is within your means) participate in any solidarity rally and, even better, donate to any fund that is willing to purchase solar panels and batteries.     I wonder if the mounting energy crisis from the Iran war might be a lifeline to Cuba.

    Even without the infrastructure from China, Cubans are more capable (socially and economically) of surviving scarcity. They need to outlast the US.
