Dude was a right wing racist homophobic lunatic to the very end. “A real one” as in piece of shit
Thank you Internet for ruining everything I’ve ever enjoyed
I mean you can like the Canterbury Tales in Space, and now you don’t even have to worry about him benefiting from the sale! Everyone wins!

Crazy, right? That some dude obsessed with Jesus metaphors, space Catholicism, social “degeneration,” and how Empire is Good, actually, as long as it doesnt do any of that pesky welfare would be a conservative phobe?
Idk Hyperion was good though. Well, I thought it was just okay, but I see why people liked it.
Lol, that makes a lot of sense.
Read Hyperion while backpacking in 2018. The action was pretty good but god damn did it treat woman as more disposable and subject to men’s ambitions than a roll of toilet paper. Even Vonnegut was better and that’s not praise for him either.
That’s because Dan Simmons was a hyper conservative driven insane by Obama.

Didn’t really need more evidence but it tracks
I DNFd a copy of Hyperion borrowed from a library in the early 90s.
While I had the tolerance to read a lot of dubious science fiction, and gave it a fair shot, it grated.
Reading that review, I’m so glad not to have pushed myself to give Simmons’ books another try.
Who gives a character the N-word for a middle name and writes him with contempt in the name of allegory?
Sure, im just comfortable seeing someone unhumorously engage in blatant misogyny and writing them off completely on the first go. If it’s humorous I’ll check to see if it’s cynicism before.
This was one of the first hard sci-fi books I ever tried to read. I think I was 15 at the time. I didn’t make it on the first attempt, and had to put it down for a couple of years…but holy shit, was it ever good, once I picked it back up again. By far, still one of my favorite series of all time.
Well I didn’t like the man or his work, so, meh.
