I feel like the last judge is a perfect test of your abilities for the 1st act

    Savage Beastfly

Never even met the Judge in Act 1 and even then, she’s not very random

Like, why does this chonky bug take me more try than Last Judge? The pattern is more frustrating to learn than Groal the Great.

It’s a pretty fast boss, pair it off with randomised additions and there’s a lot that can go wrong, and it really punishes mistakes.

Man the first time I beat Last Judge I was so relieved, on 1HP, and died to his explosion at the end.

I took a little break after that

So on my first playthrough I somehow convinced myself there was no way through the Blasted Steps and did the Phantom route instead. Phantom is a great boss, not too hard. Maybe easier than Last Judge?

I never even entered Blasted Steps until Act 2. I found the Mist, got the needolin and thought “I probably need this to progress, so maybe the Lost Woods like area?”

I love that magma bell makes the last judge fight easier. And I thought I would never need that thing again after deep docks.

Agreed. Literally and figuratively, Last Judge is the perfect gatekeeper to Act 2.

The climb back from the bench isn’t so short that you’re incentivized to try fluking the boss over dozens of attempts, but it’s also interesting and short enough that you can have fun learning to speedrun through it.

The boss tests healing opportunities, dashing, floating, and reading telegraphs, but what it probably prepares you for the most is controlling your nerves.

It does take a lot of hits, but there’s a high skill ceiling where you can wail on it if you’re bold and skilled enough. But it can also teach you patience and how to pick your hits carefully if you don’t have great reflexes.

Widow is a solid second place for me. Part of that is because the approach to her fight from the bench is pretty trivial.

I think the hardest for me was sister splinter, just due to the restrictive arena and those damn helpers. The last judge was more “standard”, just one enemy to keep my eyes on and not too many moves to learn. Not saying it was easy, it still took me many tries of course 😅

Judging by my 2nd run, Splinter is supposed to teach you to man up and use skills to 1HKO the adds, instead of saving up for heals. If you get hit, keep going. Beaten in one try very quickly, while other bosses, even Lace and Bell Beast took a few even having beaten the game.

I personally found Widow fairly hard until I managed to calm down and read her better.

Widow’s music and the sheer spectacle of her bell attacks really made her more of a challenge than she actually was.

Judge, it was almost more of an endurance fight where you had to keep up or get steamrolled. Harder, but didn’t quite make the same impression that Widow did.

Yeah I got the “flow” of last judge much quicker than widow. After only a couple attempts I felt like “all right, I can do this” while against window I was thrilled to FINALLY beat her… Only to realise she had a second phase

The last judge is hard, but in a really useful way - if you’re not keeping your eyes on the enemy and proactively reading their tells, you’re not going to be able to enjoy the back half of the game as much.

I had to kind of retrain my eyes to be able to beat this one… All throughout the game up to that point, I was so enthralled with the spectacle of combat that I’d be watching myself more than the enemy. But that leads to passivity.
