iirc and I’m probably wrong but I think he impales his hand on it to draw blood to feed the Fell For It Again Award

Guts and the band of hawks fell for it by rescuing Griffith who ends up betraying them and the band of hawks, I guess. Although it’s supposed to be (and is) a surprise in the narrative, so I don’t think this works.

        surprise in the narrative

Nope the first arc is the blackswords men arc, where Griffith is explicitly named as the enemy of guts, and guts is extremely vengeful towards griffith the reader/watcher does know that something is going bad was going to happen. The Golden Age arc is just kinda written so good that most people forget/suppress it.

Its kinda like the red wedding, where is a LOT of foreshadowing (very blatant via prophecy), but more so even because its actually a very large flashback.

While I don’t think the hawks could have predicted the instantly-apocalyptic magnitude of what would happen, if you listen to almost anything that Griffith says from the moment that Guts meets him, it is very clear that he is neither trustworthy nor particularly interested in altruism or human welfare generally.
