ah, the french
The Grey Menace should have never been put under government protection.
I have a deep hatred for geese and swans, bastards chased me as a kid. I’ve harbored a grudge all these years, and some day if one of them comes at me again it’s going to catch hands.
CW: Animal harm
My grandpa used to take me hunting for canada geese when i was a kid. There’s a season for it if your hatred gets to be too strong
Ha, thanks for the fyi! I’m being hyperbolic above. But I won’t run from large waterfowl on principle, I’m weird like that.
I feel weird randomly saying stuff about things so it’s nice to know it wasn’t weird to you
Not weird at all! I’m legit down to goose hunt at some point. I don’t like to kill animals, but if I do I’m going to eat them. I feel like it’s a lot more ethical.
I never understood why something that seems to thrive in the parking lot of a Walmart needs the government to protect it
It went like this:
- people ate passenger pigeons, so people shot every last one and they went extinct
- people ate goose and used their down, so people were working on killing every last one
- before every last goose was cooked, laws were made to stop people from keeping ‘farm’ geese as decoys and only allowing shooting with limits during fall migration (when the offspring were mature – no egg harvesting, either).
- people in the U.S. did not see any geese from fall until spring
- those farm geese? they didn’t migrate but were no longer allowed on farms
- there are several versions of what happened next, but somehow someone decided we should have non-migratory/farm/resident geese in various places … with no predators and without changing the old laws

Those buffalo look awfully strange

Was gonna talk about Cackling Geese, the good-humored cousin and lookalike of these honkers, and I really enjoyed the title of this article on goose identification. Makes it seem very high stakes and intriguing.

Literally the opening scene of Red Dawn.
