Advice to a Friend on Choosing a Mistress (1745)

My dear Friend,

I know of no Medicine fit to diminish the violent natural Inclinations you mention; and if I did, I think I should not communicate it to you. Marriage is the proper Remedy. It is the most natural State of Man, and therefore the State in which you are most likely to find solid Happiness. Your Reasons against entring into it at present, appear to me not well-founded. The circumstantial Advantages you have in View by postponing it, are not only uncertain, but they are small in comparison with that of the Thing itself, the being married and settled. It is the Man and Woman united that make the compleat human Being. Separate, she wants his Force of Body and Strength of Reason; he, her Softness, Sensibility and acute Discernment. Together they are more likely to succeed in the World. A single Man has not nearly the Value he would have in that State of Union. He is an incomplete Animal. He resembles the odd Half of a Pair of Scissars. If you get a prudent healthy Wife, your Industry in your Profession, with her good Œconomy, will be a Fortune sufficient.

But if you will not take this Counsel, and persist in thinking a Commerce with the Sex inevitable, then I repeat my former Advice, that in all your Amours you should prefer old Women to young ones. You call this a Paradox, and demand my Reasons. They are these:

1. Because as they have more Knowledge of the World and their Minds are better stor’d with Observations, their Conversation is more improving and more lastingly agreable.
2. Because when Women cease to be handsome, they study to be good. To maintain their Influence over Men, they supply the Diminution of Beauty by an Augmentation of Utility. They learn to do a 1000 Services small and great, and are the most tender and useful of all Friends when you are sick. Thus they continue amiable. And hence there is hardly such a thing to be found as an old Woman who is not a good Woman.
3. Because there is no hazard of Children, which irregularly produc’d may be attended with much Inconvenience.
4. Because thro’ more Experience, they are more prudent and discreet in conducting an Intrigue to prevent Suspicion. The Commerce with them is therefore safer with regard to your Reputation. And with regard to theirs, if the Affair should happen to be known, considerate People might be rather inclin’d to excuse an old Woman who would kindly take care of a young Man, form his Manners by her good Counsels, and prevent his ruining his Health and Fortune among mercenary Prostitutes.
5. Because in every Animal that walks upright, the Deficiency of the Fluids that fill the Muscles appears first in the highest Part: The Face first grows lank and wrinkled; then the Neck; then the Breast and Arms; the lower Parts continuing to the last as plump as ever: So that covering all above with a Basket, and regarding only what is below the Girdle, it is impossible of two Women to know an old from a young one. And as in the dark all Cats are grey, the Pleasure of corporal Enjoyment with an old Woman is at least equal, and frequently superior, every Knack being by Practice capable of Improvement.
6. Because the Sin is less. The debauching a Virgin may be her Ruin, and make her for Life unhappy.
7. Because the Compunction is less. The having made a young Girl miserable may give you frequent bitter Reflections; none of which can attend the making an old Woman happy.

Thus much for my Paradox. But still I advise you to marry directly; being sincerely Your affectionate Friend.

Younger women don’t communicate nearly as well as more mature women in my experiences. Older women are far more likely to tell you what they want in a straightforward way, and they actually want what it is they told you.

Sometimes it’s because the older woman is more confident and knows what she wants more than a younger man’s peers. Sometimes it’s because the older woman puts more effort into her looks and clothing, and knows what looks good and doesn’t look good on her. Sometimes it’s about the older woman letting loose after she spent a lot of time building herself up, making her own money, getting her own space, and deciding now it’s time to have fun. And sometimes it’s Oedipal.

Short version:

They can be actually better at the various techniques of both romance and having sex than younger women, due to being more practically experienced.

They can be much more direct and straightforward with what they want, what the boundaries and rules and expectations of the relationship are, more skilled at communicating these things, less likely to lead to some kind of high drama / situationship type scenario.

They can be … basically just innately complimented/flattered by the idea that they are appealing to younger men, that they ‘still got it’.

They can be more mature, in the sense of having a stable, functional self-image and living situation/economic status, a greater set of life knowledge and ‘academic’ type, deep subject knowledge, thus interests and taste/style, and a greater ability to self-regulate their emotions.

Things like these can make courting such a woman a more appealing prospect, a more rewarding prospect, a more attainable goal for a younger guy, as compared to dating other women, closer to their own age.

Well when I was in my twenties, there was a lady who was in her 40s I was infatuated with. It sounds like 20 years but I think it was closer like only 13 years difference, I just don’t remember our exact ages.

She was confident, she was calm, she wasn’t fueled by drama, she was kind, she was easy to talk too. And when she let me know that I was too young for her she did it with grace.

Emotional maturity is hot I suppose. Better for men who are subby, tend to be thicker, you are fucking an equal (or superior) that knows what they are doing.

For me younger women are way too immature. I am a survivor of childhood mental, physical, and sexual abuse. I’m also considered high intelligence (in 3rd grade I was ranked in the top ten percentile and at 7th grade I had no subject knowledge rated below college level and some were in graduate school levels) but I have not taken a true IQ test and can’t remember my SAT scores. As you can imagine I have some personal issues as well.

Women around my own age (or younger) are fun for just sex but relationships don’t work. My current partner calls me an old soul and we are happy together. She is 16 years older than me but we mesh well together.

While I’m not an older man, I can see the appeal of being into a younger crowd. I’m still really young (23) and have the kink where it’s fun to fantasize about being used by an older man/men but also to be with someone younger than me- mainly bc of the dynamic. If they’re younger they might have less experience so I could be the mind blowing tale they get to experience, and it would just be fun to use my skills on someone w so much less experience (:

Like anything, people get better at sex with practice. And older women have had more time to practice.
