Technology@lemmy.world•Uber is letting women avoid male drivers and riders in the USEnglish
1·2 days agoIf you called a taxi company that didnt do fixed rates you should have looked into them before you called.
Why would I call them? They should have a web app at minimum. It should be on par with what the Uber app can do.
When taxis catch up, I’ll consider them.
If you consider a ride “mooching” I would not want to be your friend.
Calling a friend to ensure myself a ride to anywhere at any time at my sole discretion and choosing is mooching if I expect that.
If your public transit isnt good enough, call your local reps and COMPLAIN.
That doesn’t get me to where I’m going.
Fuck this culture of “tipping”.
Agreed. I’d much rather have the whole cost of the trip paid for up front from the start. No added taxes, fees, or bonuses at any point.
Do you verify with each driver to make sure they end up getting the money? Uber has obfuscated tipping for drivers FOR YEARS.
I looked it up and saw that Uber was misleading/lying about a portion of the cost of a trip going to drivers. But from what I’ve read, including from Uber drivers themselves, the tips do seem to go to the driver as is paid by the passenger.

1·2 days agoThey both report it to Uber and Uber decides who’s trolling. If the same passenger is being turned away by every driver, that passenger is probably a troll. And vice versa.

56·3 days agoTaxi drivers and taxi companies rip off passengers. Taxi companies don’t do fixed rates agreed-upon before the trip.
I’m not going to mooch off a friend.
Public transit can’t always get me where I need to go when I need to get there in a reasonable time (but it is my first choice when it’s too far or unpleasant to walk).
If the issue is the drivers not being paid well, then tip well.
When taxis and/or public transit can improve their services to the point where Uber doesn’t replace them, then Uber will be redundant.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is a belief you’ve done a total 180 on?
10·7 days agoTo me, lowering taxes and lessening regulations sounds like “We don’t want to break the whole system or aggravate you. We just want to make the system worse and make life harder for people who don’t have money”.
The way I see it is that we could have lower taxes for working class people by taxing the rich more and reducing corporate welfare. We wouldn’t even have to compromise on our systems. If you’re in favour of those, that’s awesome – I haven’t met very many conservatives who think that way.
But what’s wrong with regulations? Regulations are what stop corporations from cutting corners on health and safety in the name of profits. And we can see from practices around the world that not only does violating these tend NOT to sway public opinion enough that businesses will stop doing harmful things, but they will knowingly do these things and cause harm to people who couldn’t have known any better beforehand.

News@lemmy.world•More Americans disapprove than approve of U.S. strikes against Iran
1·8 days agoThat sounds like you support the attack on Iran.
And here’s the rest of my original comment:
At the same time, I can’t help but feel the US is not doing this out of altruism, but out of opportunism.
And again, I’m speaking about regime change; the regime that was murdering the innocent citizens of Iran for the crime of conducting peaceful protests against said regime.

1·8 days agoOf course it’s not unanimous. It’s hard to get a true complete consensus.
Had you been following the protests in Iran even before the attacks?
I’ve met many people from Iran. Every single one of them left due to the regime, or were children of parents who left because of the regime.
I’m not making this point out of pro-American imperialism. Not in the slightest. This is about what many people in Iran want, and what their government has been murdering them for wanting.
