Any of you do late night workouts? What’s that like if you do?

I have all the equipment I need at home. The problem is, our schedule is fucking bonkers. I work 7:30ish to 4, I take my oldest into school and take her home since I work at the school. My SO isn’t home until 4:30, we pick the other kiddo up at 5. Dinner at six, bedtime at 7:30, kids are out by 8ish. Oldest has dance on Mondays till 6. SO has class on Tuesday till 8. She has homework and readings to do every week as a result. Weekends got swim class, dance for the little guy, library, groceries, naps, plans with the kids or friends or family.

I’m doing all this math on every hour of the week and I’m coming to the conclusion that I could get a solid hour every day if I wanted after everyone goes to bed. From 10 to 11. My ADHD keeps me up anyway, I likely won’t make much noise, the living room already has those foam padding jigsaw tiles on the floor to keep the kids from tumbling on the hard floor. It’s in the basement, the kids sleep soundly, my SO isn’t a night owl like I am.

This seems like a no brainer and that usually means I’m overlooking something. The one thing keeping me from working out at home was privacy, and this gets me that because people will be passed the fuck out anyway. Obviously this is like a twice a week and eventually a three day a week thing.

How fucked up are my mornings going to be? Weekdays we’re up at six to get the day on schedule. Am I going to be totally fucked those mornings?

  • the only discipline i have ever managed to keep was waking up earlier and working out first thing. literally, go peepee, take morning pills, hit the mat. it’s become part of my morning autopilot, where all i am doing is putting one foot in front of the other because i’m locked into a schedule and can’t dawdle.

personally, my theory is that the general vibe of how mornings are a grumpy time is the cortisol / stress hormone, literally spikes as you’re waking up. the body is dumping it to get you up, alert, and in gear, so i figure why not ride that wave. once i’m through, i hit the shower and the rest of my day begins with me being awake as fuck, loose, and fully in my body and feel like i’m coasting. that feeling is a total positive feedback loop. i’m at work by 7:45am and feeling groovy.

i’ve tried working out at night, but it kind of wakes me up and i lose some sleep time waiting to get settled again. not to mention, i’m good at putting it off until it gets so late i’m just like, “fuk it im tired.”

i don’t think i’ve said any reason others can’t do it, but for the life of me, mornings are my jam. i am rocking 5 days a week, every week, and have held that pattern literally for nearly 24 months.

i also don’t do caffeine in the morning anymore and have been transitioning to less and less warm showers in the a.m., so i probably seem totally nuts to most people lol. i’m not quite there to a cold shower, but have done some cool ones and i tell you what, i am firing on all cylinders when i do that. i have friends that wake up, put on a pot of coffee, and sit quietly in a chair in their PJs for the first 30 minutes of their day. they think i must be a serial killer when i describe my routine.

Your own body will tell you better than any of us can.

Try one night with a shortened session, like twenty minutes. If you feel fine the following day, try more nights. If you’re still good after a week or two of the new schedule, then you can extend the sessions until you reach the hour or find your limit.

I usually sleep better after exercise, it’s a good outlet for restless energy. I say give it a try, just be sure to stretch and don’t go too hard, or you might wake up sore.

in my experience waking up an hour early and working out in the morning would be better, but I have also finished 20km runs at night and gone straight to bed from a quick shower and been fine, didnt even toss and turn during the night. It’s mostly a mental thing I think.

im sure theres some science about this though

Depends on your type of personality and exact schedule. I think night workout can be really nice if you can take atleast 30 min after to chill and shower and relax. Night workout can tire you out and make you sleep well but usually not immediately after since you’re all jazzed from the workout itself.

Plus it can be a time (on either end of the day) to just think about shit while you move your body. It’s nice.

All the positives people say about starting a day with the workout is true tho.

I don’t sleep worse after lifting weights at night, in fact I sleep better, but need time between the workout and bedtime to chill out. I usually watch a movie while working out which is nice and then finish the movie and shower before bed.

I do find I need more sleep though, and it’s harder to wake up early, so there’s that consideration

Between a busy work schedule and bonding time for my child and wife, I just try to do a weughtlifting bro split. Lower body/upper body on Tuesday/Wednesday. Repeat on Saturday/Sunday. I do this all at home with a set of Powerblock adjustable dumbbells.

I try to do half of my lifting for 45-ish minutes before work at the ass crack of dawn and finish the rest after work. Some of this is done between 830-10pm.

I do better on my days off where I lift for 2-3 hours straight while taking copious breaks for family time, housework, YouTube, and Hexbear reading.

There are weeks where I miss one of the two days for one part of the body and I just accept that. Since I’m in my late 30s, I just do what I can to stay in decent shape.
