Tomorrow I’m competing in a martial arts tournament I’ve been training really hard for for weeks. My first tournament for this sport (did one before easy back in uni).

It’s stick fighting, which was used as training for saber fencing.

    Vacation!

I’ve been working at a new office since January of last year, a year and a half now. When I got here I found out that there are four positions and only 3 people to cover them. In my naivety, and the confusing title to my position, I went ahead and took on the responsibilities of the position we didn’t have covered organically to our individual job descriptions. So, the other two individuals mostly only had to do their individually assigned job, but I had to do most of the tasks for the job we didn’t have covered. It was fine, though, since those tasks used to be mine in my prior position in a different office.

The team is my boss, then me, and then a position that should report to me but is filled with someone with more seniority, at the same pay rate as me, and who is retiring this month. So, he doesn’t listen to me. He worked with regional, outside of my boss and I, to convince them that I… was going to cover down on his responsibilities when he leaves the office. Which, seeing as how I am doing 2 jobs already… wasn’t the plan my boss and I had discussed.

Some background; over the last year this retiring coworker has repeatedly failed to do his job and then blamed me for not contributing enough to the team (failing to acknowledge that he is working 1 job with half the responsibility his position would require in a different office, while getting paid an entire pay grade higher than his position is authorized). He has also verbally attacked me repeatedly, as well as multiple superiors, and including threats of violence.

Back to the retirement; his regional counterparts think I’m doing his job, but I won’t. I don’t report to that regional team, my primary job and the secondary one I took on are both separate teams regionally than this retiring guy’s. I will do my job, and I will find time to do my second job. But, I will not be doing his job.

Now, my boss. My boss needs to come to terms with the fact that he is going to do the retiring guy’s job and he needs to coordinate with the higher regional group to be their POC on those tasks. Because, I am not doing 3 jobs while he does 1, and I am outright NOT doing this belligerent assholes job (especially since he thinks he can dictate that I do it as the last thing he does on his way out).

Finally; I am going on vacation this week, the trip starts Sunday. It’s the last week the retiring coworker will be in the office, it’s my birthday week, and it’s the first major trip with the new girlfriend and the first in the new office.

This morning I took my dog to a big community yardsale. We walked around for hours and he met a bunch of other dogs. It felt good to get some sun and move my body.

Dirt therapy, which is mostly weeding at this point, and some Stardew Valley. It is not lost on me that these are both farm related. It would be cool if I could mix the two, although I’m not sure I would want to enslave Junimos IRL. However, it might be fun to explore a nearby cave or hang out with a local wizard.
