    Personally, I don’t subscribe to the image of the tortured artist waiting and waiting for some elusive muse to bequeath the “spark.” Writing is a skill, which like any skill needs time, repetition, and study to develop, just like any other skill.

    As a beginner, this is really encouraging for me, because that means the more I do it, the better I’ll become. I’m about 82k words into my first novel, and even though I know it’s probably trash, I still feel like I’ve grown (if just a little bit).


  • Having a true spark is rare for me. But I know that if I just write something, I can come back later and either rewrite it or edit it into something better. I’m more confident in my editing abilities than my ability to nail something the first time.

    So I’m OK with writing something when I don’t feel super inspired or whatever. I just need to get it down, first.
