Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Do you prefer bare bones software that you customize with plugins, or an all-in-one solution that does everything you need out of the box?English
9·1 day agoI do most my work on the terminal so I prefer something in the middle: convention over configuration, most functionality included but rather small by default. More complex needs can be compiled in.
Related: I wish more Linux distributions’ package managers would allow for binary installation alongside source compiled packages. In FreeBSD I’m amazed at how well
pkg’ binary packages play with ports-compiled ones.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are your thoughts on the Macbook Neo?
1·2 days agoYeah exactly. I’ve got a Windows Vista era laptop that runs Linux without issue.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are your thoughts on the Macbook Neo?
2·2 days agoThat’s what I always say but it always devolves into “Apple shortchanges its users” talk.
Strangely it’s not even about Reddit. I was about to go off about “who cares about Reddit, this is Lemmy” but the post body just meanders on about communities on the latter for some reason.

3·2 days agoJesus Christ the comments predictably went straight back into the 8 GB debate. So burned out on this theme.
Couldn’t find a better title than “…reddit…”?
This reminds me of a long running joke I have with my wife since I purchased a pizza oven. The idea is to invite all our friends over for “pizza night” but when they all show up we’d just have a few “fancy” frozen pizzas.

8·2 days agoDude even just reading his drivel is almost impossible with the fucked up casing everywhere. How do people make it through a complete paragraph (if that’s what you call just dumping out lines of text)?

I mean, what else is new?

Apple@lemmy.zip•It's 2026, and I still can't believe Apple won't change the most frustrating thing about iOS
32·7 days agoHaving no apps in the background except recently used ones
This is exactly what iOS does seamlessly. The unused apps’ memory is dumped to disk and when you come back to it later it’s moved back into memory.
Going through all the apps and swiping up to close them is a habit that comes from early Android users and is completely unnecessary on iOS. It’s been that way for a long, long long time, so long that I would guess iOS 3 or 4.

Android@lemmy.world•Would you rather: insecure SMS in an open-source app, or RCS in Google Messages? (contact won't use Signal)English
8·7 days agoI absolutely cannot stand RCS. Here in the US all the carriers have given up implementing it themselves and instead offload it to Google — I’m not even an Android user! I have to explicitly unblock a bunch of Google domains for RCS to work.
E2E will be nice once it’s functional with iOS but I still loathe depending on Google.

Because you’re trashing the environment, wasting compute cycles, unnecessarily transferring data, wasting bandwidth (however small), etc?
Just use the calculator app bro.
