There’s even a nice little song about it:

Okay, that settles that.
So from your end, you might possibly consider that I’m just making the whole “attitude” thing up!
Okay, but can you see that number if you click on your own user page?
At this point I’m thinking “attitude” isn’t actually generated by Lemmy, which would explain why you can’t see it.
As for how it’s calculated, the PieFed author (Rimu) says this:
There is a similar and visible stat that every profile has, which is ‘attitude’. That is the ratio of upvotes vs downvotes they cast. It can be helpful for spotting nasty people or those that engage in vote brigading.

1·12 hours agoI know what it means. My point is that literally the words mean one thing, and figuratively they mean another, just like lots of other expressions and definitions.
What can I say? I enjoy the process of such things…

1·7 hours agoRight-so, I’ve joined.
And I certainly do have some nice elephant shots in my too-large collection of animal pics. Next time I run across one, I’ll be sure to post there!
EDIT: Hah, found one already. It’s scheduled for 10AM EST, or just a few minutes more…
Over there on Lemmy.World, what happens when you hover your mouse over another user’s name? Does a popup card of info appear after a second or two?
In any case, that’s what appears using PieFed software, which is where the 46% number is listed. And yeah-- for sure it’s a precise number, exactly calculated from your upvote / downvote ratio.
I can also see such info (and more) if I go ahead and click on another user’s ID, but the popup box is certainly handy for not needing to do that.
Right, and that ties in to what I was speculating about above.
One idea being that if you’re going to ‘throw your weight around,’ it might be risky to do so as just a lurking-type user. Whereas if you’re someone with a high internal score, it would likely be harder to get permabanned, which of course is something that traditionally needs some level of admin intervention to make happen. Mods can at best only ban from communities they’re a part of.

Literally, “the way of iron,” or “the iron way.”
Quaint!
Did you ever happen to check your overall Reddit reputation using 3rd party sites?
I strongly suspect that Reddit runs such an internal service, which brings up some implications. One idea being that borderline users are probably seen as ‘no big loss,’ while valued contributors have more rope to play with. That’s all just speculation of course, but there are plenty of people who’ve commented along the lines of ‘I barely said anything objectionable and yet they permabanned me just like that!’
Not trying to imply that was your deal, but it does make me wonder. Sort of like the old trope of “everyone in prison being innocent.” I’ve never seen someone in these communities actually say ‘yeah, they banned me, and I probably deserved it.’
Here and there I see people complaining about the things you detail in the comments, and sometimes out of curiosity I check that person’s attitude, and every single time it’s been pretty miserable.
Lo and behold, your current attitude sits at 46%, meaning (as I understand it) that you’re downvoting more often than you’re upvoting. My question is: what are you even doing here if you’re so obviously unsatisfied by so much content on the Fediverse? And is it maybe time that you found a social media site that better fits your likes…?

4·14 hours agoI wouldn’t normally mention a community I’m contributing to, but a small team of us have taken it upon ourselves to revive !animals@lemmy.world, which had been pretty dead until 3wks ago. It is by far the most active animal-themed community across the known Fediverse, and yet oddly, it only has ~250 subscribers, currently.
If you enjoy seeing pics & info about all manner of interesting Earth creatures, consider giving it a look. The place could probably use a moderator too, if anybody’s up for that.

How voting works:
Vote the opposite of the norm.
If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it’s something that’s widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

1·17 hours agoI think you’re mostly in the ballpark (mostly), but it’s still highly misleading to associate so loosely and lazily. I mean, you have entities and corporations in which the founders truly are fascist / deeply right-wing, and it’s worth calling them out and making that clear to as many folks as possible.
Disingenuously calling Substack “fascist” because it allows wacko subgroups to operate is the exact same argument you could make about Reddit, Facebook, and several others. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the founders and showrunners are in fact fascists by definition, even as yes, the real-world definition of fascism and late-stage capitalism are indeed deeply intertwined.
So, no-- I reject the commenter above’s disingenuous label. And a big part of the reason why we use words and language is to point out subtle differences in things. Because we don’t have to be cavemen who lump disparate things together out of ignorance, fear, and whatnot.

I will say, though-- just because the songs are handpicked doesn’t mean that they’re necessarily good songs. However, the genre tags help a lot with that kind of thing.

By contrast, being forced to browse the site in “New” mode would indeed be a terminal enshittification.

Japanese audiences and just Japanese groups of people in general are quite a unique beast, and not really a great reference point for comparison, IMO.
